Elgato Question

With the Elgato Game Capture HD do you have to output a signal through the device in order for it to work? I was thinking of buying an hdmi signal amplifier and splitter box so that the signal from my console to my tv wouldn't have to pass through the capture card and hence reduces lag. Is this possible?

There is 0 lag using the elgato HDMI output, it is a direct pass through, even while recording

 

the recording is all done over USB, there is a lag on the recording as it takes time to process so you cannot play watching this,
