I just thought of something that i cant explain. The new devils canyon cpu's come with a stock cooler as far as i can tell which doesnt make sense as there is no way they are adequate for overclocking with the devils canyon series is designed for. Wouldnt it make more sense to take $10 off the price and not have it included? i see the reasons to have them on everything else (excluding extreme editions). what are your thought? also the package would be smaller which may lower postage costs.

So You were expexting it to be like amd's fx-9590 relaunch that has a AIO cooler instead of stock?

You cant oc at all on the stock cooler. also the reasons for no stock cooler on the extreme editions is because they are so expensive that i doubt you cant afford a good one and also they get really hot.

no because 99% of people use the stock cooler and it doesn't cost $10, it cost $0.8-2 depending on whether its the copper one or the aluminium one and its easier for them to have the same packaging for all there cpu's

What if you are content with stock frequencies? They are still higher than pre-refresh cpus.

Here's the thing though - at 4.4 GHz across all cores which most motherboards will force, the stock cooler isn't really capable of cooling down the chip despite the so called better TIM. Most owners tried it for giggles and testing before going liquid cooling only to see 80+ C temperatures under load.

if you watched the intel live strem the other day you would understand why they do it. they even said if the stock cooler does keep it at reasonable temps then you cans end it back to them.

Devil's Canyon chips are ONLY in reference to the unlocked chips. If you don't bother overclocking then you have literally no reason to buy a devil's canyon. If you overclock and can afford a devil's canyon, op is saying you have literally no reason to use the stock cooler - so why do they bother including it..

Yes, but the 4790k is still clocked higher than a 4770 at stock. Either way it could be that people want to use it for a while at stock and overclock it later when they can afford a better cooler.

I did see that. What is reasonable? Do you anticipate consumers really knowing they can send this back? Even if they spend money to get this shipped, all they get is a replacement unit in the same specs that will do the same thing again unless Intel is replacing them with AIO or better heatsink based coolers for some reason.

I like to buy the boxed version for a very simple reason... fail save.

Whenever you run into issues with a cooler... it´s gonna be saturday evening or sunday hehe and you can´t get what you need. But the shitty original cooler will bring you through the time until you needed parts arrive :D.

Other than that it is just a few bucks more, which I don´t mind. When I set up a new rig I test always with the stock cooler, to run the machine in a very basic setup and do some tests before I put on the custom coolers (air or water) and go for OCing. That is anyway for me a requirement since customers/friends that pay for a rig don´t want to run into issues, and I don´t want to be embarrassed ;) .
