Hi all

I was trying to put together a new, pretty much high performance pc today. I was going for a I7 4790 in the first place until I saw that the K series now has full Vt-D support ! So that made me consider going with the 4790k. I will use this machine for both gaming and some developing stuff (which will include working with lots of virtual machines). I already have a 1920*1080 monitor, mouse, speakers etc. Also got a ton of HDD lying around so I don't really need any peripherals.

I don't really have a budget, I aimed for around 1500 euro (that's 2048 usd), the current built is 1340 euro. It don't really care if it exactly fits the budget, I just want to get my money's worth, sweetspot components.

I picked the following components:

case: fractal design define r4

motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H

CPU: i7-4790k

GPU: Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X 4GB
RAM: crucial ballistix tactical 1600 MHz 32GB (4*8)
Cooler: Aftermarket 'Be quiet shadow rock slim'

PSU: Corsair RM Series RM750

Storage: Corsair mx100 512gb

Now I was unsure if the 750W psu had sufficient power to power the whole built with the i7 4790 running overclocked. Any recommendations on PSU wattage for this built ?

Also, would the cooler be sufficient ? Maybe anyone has prior experience with this particular cooler ?

(Recommendations on the other parts are obviously also welcome).

Oh, I'm currently rolling a OEM small-formfactor pc that I have been using for WAY too long. It has a AMD A6-3600 APU with a rather low-spec AMD HD 6450. Already upgraded that with some 840 EVO SSD's and now has 22 Gigs of ram. But it simply does not do the job anymore, the case has no room for expansion etc..  So obviously I'm building this new rig for more performance, capability to game on max settings, and visualization capabilities.

the 4790K ill kick ass at bothGaming and editing stuff, i suggest a Z97 Gaming 9 or  Sabertooth tuf Z97, also suggest a Seasonic X series 750W 80+ Gold, that one you already got will do just fine but i just trust Seasonic build quality and going 750W with Gold efficiency will allow even 290 CF and even more, you're editing so you 'll nedd like a 2TB HDD, the cooler is really good, i use a Dark Rock 2 and it's Just Fine, i suggest you also check the NH-D14 or the Swiftech H220, tha R4 is a awesome Case also suggest checking out the NZXT H440 and the HAF X

Hi Lawrence, thanks for your response.

I chose that Corsair RM Series RM750 because I already have it lying around, it is also 80+ gold certified. I chose this particular motherboard because it has the Z97 set with 2 Gigabit lan ports on board. One of which I will use to directly connect it to my NAS that stores my Virtual Machine images. I'm going to use the SSD in combination with a hitachi 2TB drive I still have around.

And yes, I agree that NZXT case is great, I will probaly go with that one.

(It's just a shame that my GPU is like 30,5 CM, the case supports 29. So I'll have to remove the drivebays.)

Oh and thanks Izaya, I live in The Netherlands.

Looks fine so far. The rm750 is already overkill though. The system would easily run off of a decent 550w.
