Installing Windows 8.1

Hey im building a PC and im going to use a HDD that has Windows 8 pre-installed on it already, I know that I cant just plug it in and it will load so I have got a new copy of Windows 8.1, my question is, will I have to format the HDD before I use it on my new Mobo and install Windows 8.1 or will it just install it over the top of the old one?

My PC rig: I7-4790, Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z87, EVGA GTX 780 SC ATX 6GB, Thermaltake Urban S31 Case with Window, Corsair RM 850, Samsung Evo 120gb SSD, 5TB HDD, Kingston Hyper 1866 8GB RAM

Installing over a non-formatted install of Windows will put things in a Windows.old folder and it will be mostly user data (docs,images,etc) and contents of the C: drive. Nothing much really.

 

Always best to just do a fresh install.

so basically when i bulid my pc and put in the windows 8.1 dvd it will just install as normal then i can delete the windows old folder?

Depends on what path you want to take.

 

Can format the drive and start fresh also (from the windows Install screen)

 cool so when I install windows 8.1 it will give me the option to basically get rid of the Windows 8 already installed and wont need to make a window old folder?
