I've got a Netgear N600 DGND3700v2 wireless router and I've had great success with plugging in a HDD and using it for extra storage over the local network.

I've installed the Netgear Genie - a utility for the router which should allow me to create a personal cloud. I've gone through the motions and it will no longer go into a personal cloud setup. I've also visited various Netgear sites and it says that the service is no longer available. I'm guessing since they're now selling the purpose-built NAS devices they've dropped support for more DIY orientated jobs.

Surely there's a way around this, by some manipulation of the router utility or just creating a public port?

I am obviously wanting a level of security with this, as personal information is kept on the drive - I am not overly experienced with port forwarding.

Thanks,
