I had a problem using Google Chrome for two days now - i can`t use the control alt key combination anymore to write an @. However i can type an @ when using the AltGr key.Somebody has an idea why and how to fix this? Its a pain in to use the AltGr key if you are not used to it.

Thanks

Are you sure you're using the wrong combo? I always used Shift+2. That seems to work fine.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

If Shift+3 produces the correct symbol (£/$/§/#/^/etc) and AltGr+Q (or whatever combination is needed) produces @, it most likely won't be the keyboard layout.

My money would be on a stuck/temperamental/sticky key. If so, it's probably one or more of Shift (any), CTRL (any), ALT, or Fn (if on keyboard). It doesn't sound like the @ key itself is the issue.

I'm assuming you're on Windows, and I'm assuming this is an actual keyboard rather than on a touch screen.

If it is a stuck Shift/Ctrl/Alt key, hit Esc with Chrome as the active window and another taskbar-pinned program open in the background behind Chrome. Esc plus any of those keys (or any combination) in Chrome on Windows 7 (can't remember other version key combos) will do something, whereas if none of those keys are stuck it won't do anything unless you're (re)loading a page.

Open osk.exe and move the mouse outside of the on screen keyboard area. If Shift/Ctrl/Alt/Fn are all working properly, they'll turn white when you press the key(s) and back to black when you release it (Shift/Ctrl will turn the keys white on both left & right sides of on screen keyboard, and black when released - if they stay lit test the one on the other side of the keyboard, one of them is sticking).

The most unlikely scenario is a stuck Del key with a driver/filter disabling the CTRL+ALT+DEL combo. A key remapper program is another long-shot possibility, but if osk.exe highlights a key as non-/semi-functional it is probably a (visible) dirt/mechanical problem.

A new program or changed setting may also be causing unexpected behaviour. For example, if I open a tab with the CTRL+T shortcut in Firefox with 3D Vision enabled always, an eventual "why has this tab gone black?!" will occur.

If it's an electrical issue, and you want to stick with your keyboard layout, it'd probably be safer to retrain your muscle memory for AltGr than key remapping (the key combo I just tested exited Chrome).

If the problem isn't reproducible in notepad.exe, it might just be a Chrome bug/fault. I'm using the latest stable Chrome (international/UK) here and CTRL+ALT and AltGr are functioning normally, so unless it is one of those keyboard layout specific Chrome bugs, try disabling Chrome add-ons/plug-ins/extensions, empty the cache, exit Chrome, wait, open Chrome.

Test @ in the omnibox before restoring tabs to rule out an open tab/window Javascript/similar issue. Re-enable add-ons, exit and re-launch Chrome, file a bug report if it is still an issue and you've determined Chrome is the cause (a quick glance at the English Chrome Forum just now and I didn't see a similar recent issue, and nothing in the Deutsch forum stood out).
