Help with windows 8.1 pro install

I'm building a PC for a friend today and I'm putting windows 8.1 pro on it. I have a key and put it in the setup program linked on the website http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

 

When I ran the program and detected the key was for 8.1 it started a download. It got stuck on estimating time remaining for about half an hour, so I closed it because it would have finished by then and I though the application was hanging. I reopened it and it asked me about installing now or on media. I want to make a boot USB to install windows on my friend's new PC so I selected the USB stick and it got stuck on preparing USB. I waited ten minutes then closed the program again, and reopened. I tried again and it did it instantly. I went to boot from the USB to check it was working, but it's just erased the USB and installed nothing!

 

Every time I try to reopen the program it goes to the install screen, as if it thinks the ISO is downloaded. Is there anything I can do??

 

Alternatively, I have an OEM windows 8.1 CD from my PC. Will it be able to install 8.1 pro if I put the product key for Pro in??

No an OEM CD is locked with its own CD Key.

You can delete the installer and related files in the Temp folder and redownload from MS website. Sometimes there are errors in the file.

Is that C:/Temp ? Because there's only a .txt file in there. Also I deleted the program from the download folder and reinstalled and it's doing the same thing...

Haha, hello again :)

 

Is that C:/Temp ? Because there's only a .txt file in there. Also I deleted the program from the download folder and reinstalled and it's doing the same thing...

Go to RUN and type %temp% and delete all the files.

Open the windows download application, select "install by creating media" ans select DVD to save an ISO file.

Use RUFUS to create a bootable USB.

I think it's the problem with the ISO. It says it couldn't finish creating it.

Your best option is to ask MS Customer Care. Or if you have another PC, you can try downloading it there.

My friend has a laptop so I was going to ask him if he could try, although it'll take forever with his connection...
