Partially burnt cpu?

Go to solution Solved by N3rot0xin,

ok, post voltage readings when you can

So after checking voltages everything on the psu checks out. All outputs are nominal and within spec. I followed a guide posted on overclocking.net or tomshardware(i don't remember which at this point) for what each pin should read.

I also borrowed my friends rig. I unplugged his hdd to prevent damage to the data. I then swapped each component out of my rig and into his and tried booting linux. After each swap and successful boot i swapped the original part back in. The problem was in fact the cpu. I confirmed this by swapping his cpu into my rig and low and behold linux booted right up. I am well and truly puzzled by this as I would've thought a cpu failure of any kind would've been a bit more....obvious. Anyways I ordered a new cpu. Hopefully the last thing I'm replacing...

EDIT:

Problem was in fact something to do with the CPU. Replaced CPU and now everything is fine. Thanks you to @DEcobra11 for the help.

I've been fighting with a seemingly unsolvable computer issue dorn3 months. In short, computer resets affair posting but only when loading an operating system. Rmad the ram and motherboard and bought a new GPU. Ended up having to buy a new mobo for reasons of a longer story. But today I was trying to select a USB stick to boot from and it was really slow. Hitting the numlock key would take several seconds to register and selecting with the arrow keys would either not work or be very slow. Like I said the mobo is a brand new board(ga990fx-ud3). PSU isn't the issue either. Could it be cpu?

I am whatever I am.

No bent pins I checked. As far as bios info I'm not sure I'm not at my house right now. Just it's relevant, this all started when I tried to flash a new bios to my old GPU using ATIflash. But this happens even when I use that old GPU

So I'm going to do a lengthy process of elimination to solve this issue.

I have 3 new or almost new components:

Mobo PSU and GPU. I'm going to do this:

For the entire process all data storage drives will be disconnected from mobo and PSU. For testing each component, I will try twice. Once with a Bootable livecd and another with my windows ssd.

Test each stick of ram with all of the new components.

Swap out the new PSU with my old one.

Swap the psus back and swap out the GPU with old GPU.

Try with both old components installed.

Rebuild rig in a test bench scenario with old mobo PSU and GPU and try booting with only Cd drive. Then swap in the new PSU and GPU testing between each swap.

Swap the PSU GPU and cpu into a friends working rig (with all data drives and os drives detached for saftey) until problem surfaces.

By the end of this I should know if it's one of the "U"s. What say you?

I am whatever I am.

Please use quote function... I didn't see any of this posts before... just was curious about the title...

anyway, if it's only with that GPU, then it was a bad flash

Can flashes fry or harm ur cpu and cause it to fail at certain times? The cpu is the only component to remain the same thru all of this testing. But I'm stumped because before I replaced the mobo the issue occurred with another cpu I borrowed out of a friends computer. That is why I thought it was the mobo so I replaced(asus is taking over a month to rma my old one with advanced replacement so I bought one). Issue still happens soooo I'm stumped and out of ideas...

I am whatever I am.

@DEcobra11, I'm borrowing a multi meter, I'm going to check voltages later today. I have another PSU I've also tried with the same results but that PSU was also slightly problematic. I'll post results today.

And yes, this happened with friends cpu in the old mobo as well. I have not yet tested friends cpu in new mobo just yet.

I am whatever I am.

please use the solved tag so we dont have to waste our time while skimming the fourm thank you

When I get my cpu in the mail(ups doesn't ship on weekends) and the problem is resolved, I will do just that. But until then it will remain unsolved as my computer has yet to successfully boot.

And nobody made you reply. You did so out of your own will. So don't think of it as wasting time.

I am whatever I am.
