Hey Guys,

I guess I will have to buy a new set of headphones since my Roccat Kave's cable is about to break (on about 60 spots lol), and so I have heard the recommendation to go with one of the above mentioned ones on other forums.

First off: I'm not considering myself even close to being audiophile, only listening to low quality Spotify-Streams, and mainly using them for gaming (FPSs only); I want to spend around 130-160€.

I do want open headphones, because I really don't annoy anyone with the sound, and I like hearing myself while talking on Teamspeak :P

At the moment, I am using the onboard sound, the ALC892 I think. Would I have to buy an amp/soundcard for these? (since they have a rather high impedance)?

(Just for comparison, on my Roccat Kave [which has an impedance of only 32Ω according to some reviews], I'm at 100% Windows Volume, but only on 4% in BF4 and very low volume on YouTube etc.).

So, what do you think about these headphones? Are there any other recommendations?

And please excuse my (potentially) bad english, it's not my native language ^^

Hey um yea it depends on which model of the dt990s you have in mind. Some of the models do not require a amp, but getting one is always recommended as it might bring up the clarity a bit. If you are in the market for a good amp I'd say you should check out the. http://www.amazon.com/Fiio-E07K-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B00A9LHLQ6

Just a side note it doesn't really make it noticeable clearer. It really just makes it louder. The 250 ohm might but some motherboards can still run those.

I'm going to put in a vote for the K612 just because of the digital piano use case. The boosted bass of the DT 990 may sound a tad boomy with a piano although it's a matter of taste. Keep in mind that your keyboard *might* require an amp even if your motherboard doesn't. But I'd try before you get one.

The E07K is 100€ here in Germany, which is a bit too much for me... What about the E11? It's only 70€. And another recommendation I've read would be the Asus DGX, since it also seems to have an amp!

Oh, and my mainboard is the ASRock 970 Extreme4, so it's the ALC892!

Unless I'm missing something here, I think both of the options are open backed headphone, while you wanted a closed back headphone?

The E07k is a DAC+amp combo, while the E11 is an amp only, and I think the amp class is the same, so it's natural that the E11 is cheaper.

I had the DG (same as DGX, only differs in the interface). DG is decent, and that's that. For the price, it does the job. I've had no problem powering 'regular' headphones, but when I got my HE400, the DG started dragging its feet just to keep up, so I resorted to an external solution (and sold my DG :) )

So, do I actually need a DAC? Or, how much would it benefit me?

Ahhhhh sorry, I read it as 'I don't want open headphones...' my bad. Too long in front of the screen, I guess.....:)

A DAC and an amp can alter the sound output, giving different sound nuances, but the differences will be so minuscule that you may or may not hear it. Is it mandatory? No (at least no for the DAC, maybe for the amp). Is it worth the money? Now this depends on every guy's subjective opinions. Some people deemed a DAC would worth their 20 grand poundsterling (the Vivaldi DAC)...

  • 1 month later...

Just a little update: I got the DT990s off of amazon today, they are AMAZING! I expected them to be a little less "bass-heavy", but they are wonderful nontheless... They also work really well without any amp, they even get good volume from my old iPhone o_O

Good to hear. The need for extra hardware to drive headphones is often drastically overstated, as evidenced by your comment.

I personally use the 990'S 250ohm model with o2dac at 3x gain and it works great, didn't bother getting the 600ohm version, because it is 50€ more and not much difference in sound according to innerfidelity.

So yeah, recommend the 990, good sub-bass and stage is awesome due to open design.

If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself.
