If you just started, play free week champions so that you can get a feel for what they're like before you buy them. And if you do buy them, buy them with IP, because RP costs real money, and you might want to make sure you like the game before you put money into it.

To be honest, all heroes/champions are great, there's none IMO that are underpowered. It's jsut how you play them. As for who you should buy - it depends. Do you like going mid lane? Top lane Bottom? I assume you won't be jungling yet as it's rare to see jungers under atleast level 20.

Just play some custom games with the free week champions, try them out and if you like them, buy them. Don't waste your RP without trying out champions. Some are harder to play than others (such as elise, jayce), and a new player would have a difficult time mastering them.

I remember when I started, I mained tryndamere top lane, he's an easy champion and great fun to play.

Edit: Just cause a champion is cheap this DOES NOT mean that champion is worse than a 6300 IP champion. Trust me on this one, thats not the case. It just means that champions been in the game longer. Each new champion starts at 6300 IP, and every new release, some champions go down in price depending on when they were released. Champion prices NEVER go up.

Take Kayle and Master Yi for example. Both are the cheapest champiosn you can buy, yet they're banned in ranked games alot. Why? They're insanely OP when played right.
