You need to re-install Windows. Windows setup will format it correctly when you delete all partitions of the drive, and re-create them.

They are ways to convert it, but it is more complicated, and risky (can result in data loss), via a partition manager software that you can boot to.

k. The process is identical for Linux based OS. So I guess you won't use that either.

It has nothing to do with the OS. It has to do with UEFI standard, and MBR being never been really updated since 1983.

I assume you'll also never buy a graphics card again, as to enjoy 3 to 6 sec (depending on the motherboard and hardware configuration, with a fast SSD) boot to Windows 8 (or Linux distro that fully support UEFI), you need to upgrade the graphics card firmware to make it GOP ready, and that means it will no longer work on BIOS systems, only on fully supported UEFI systems. Intel integrated graphics is the only that change its firmware on the fly based on the option as it is integrated.

Don't make it bootable (dont' have Windows on it, and you want to make the system boot from it). Make it a secondary drive.

Or, set UEFI to be in BIOS emulation mode. Refer to the motherboard instruction manual on how to set this up. This mode is implemented mainly for legacy OS's that don't support UEFI, like Windows Vista, for example.

Note: with Windows, you can't transfer a drive from a completely different system configuration to another. You'll be greeted with a BSOD at startup. Windows needs to be re-installed. So, while you will need to re-install Windows in any case, leaving the UEFI as UEFI mode, and Windows setup will take care of teh rest the moment you'll need to format.

If you just want to take data out of it, or access data on it, then just plug it in into the system, and you are good. Nothing to do. The system will start the Windows on your current primary drive, and the newly added drive, even though it has Windows on, will be treated as secondary drive. You'll go in Windows as normal, and you'll see a new drive in My Computer (or "This PC" in Windows 8), and when you open it, you'll see it's the HDD that you attached, and you can access anything you want from it like an external drive or USB memory stick.

Is it pre-built? If so there should be a sticker on it with your Windows key #...

Form a UEFI you can only boot to GPT but you can evable legacy to be to both or basically run in "BIOS compatible mode". Doing either does didactically increase bios boot time.

but every key is just one time usable

That's not true at all. The only restriction is that it can only be installed on one system at a time.

Okay, seriously, I hear everyone say that. Is that REALLY a thing? I have two keys on eight computers. They're DreamSpark premium keys, if that's what the difference is? The only reason I even have the second key is that I wanted to get an 8.1 key instead of just upgrading from 8 with the same key for my gaming rig. Not a fan of upgrading installations instead of going clean.

EDIT: Looked it up. Apparently I get unlimited installs but they all expire five years from the issue date. Huh. Not sure how I feel about that.

Okay, seriously, I hear everyone say that. Is that REALLY a thing? I have two keys on eight computers. Listing them by processor for desktops and model for laptops:

First Key: 4770K; Second key: 3770K, 4670K, X6 1090T, X6 1045T, i7 920, Y510P, G51JX

Not a fan of upgrading installations instead of going clean. Also, I really need to consolidate and sell most of those. -_-

Yes it true with win8 itll make you reactive the other pc almost right away. With win7 you might be able to run a bit then one gets deactivated and you cant reactivate it. I have 2 win7 Ultimate keys that wont even activate over the phone anymore. I think i might have had them running on multiple PCs by accident. :(

dreamspark keys should be able to be actived 10x or something. Thats how it was when I had it.

you can use a Win 8 key to activate 8.1
