I know, a lot of people here hate macs, I am one of them but... My parents bought an iMac back in 2009. One day the machine will kick the bucket for good and they will have to throw it away. I am fine with destroying the thing (they should just sell it now -- the computer I could build for them even with what they would get for it these days...) but I was wondering: It has a Sandy Bridge i5, which as everyone knows are very popular because they overclock like bosses. Are the CPUs in Macs soldered onto the motherboards or do they use sockets? If they use sockets, I would like to cannibalize the CPU and use it for a "just because" build.

I could also cannibalize the RAM it has...

if it's a box you could pull it out. I'm assuming you're not talking about a laptop.

wait, is this one of their AIO imacs?

iMacs use socketed, desktop CPUs, so you should be able to salvage the processor if and when it dies.

If it's a 2009 iMac it wouldn't be using Sandy Bridge, as the first Sandy Bridge CPUs were released in 2011. A 2009 iMac will be running a Core2Duo (775 Socket).

I think the AIO Imacs use SoDimms, so they wont fint inside the standard desktop.

Damn, why did I think it was a Sandy? Okay, screw it, it's useless. *wants to throw away even more*

I know. I'm the one who actually knew that. My dad, on the other hand, did not, and insisted at Best Buy that they used DIMMs. *facepalms*

two trips.

Now the Mac has 12GB of RAM. Pointless. and stupid.
