My laptop broke sometime thursday and wouldn't boot up, it ran the startup repair and found the win7 boot files weren't there. i have no idea how this happened as it was working fine during the day.

i have 2 questions. given that it said the win7 boot files weren't there:

- will it boot up if i put a disc/pen stick in the laptop with windows 7 on it?

- if that will work, where can i get a copy of windows 7 for free that isn't a dodgy download?

not sure. i think it was just the standard version,it was already on the laptop. hope the hard drive is fine, i had a lot of stuff i need on that

This is why you make frequent backups. Anyway, even when an hdd goes back you can usually pull the information off of it even if its not longer working properly--as long as it can be detected by a computer, you can usually retrieve information.

As for a windows ISO: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-home-premium-64bit-iso-download/709dcc12-d120-435d-91cd-52e1dd0f4c24
