So, for a awhile now I have been planning on fully replacing my now 4 year old rig in time for Witcher 3. That lined up nicely with maxwell, perhaps some new cpu releases... it was a nice plan, until my monitor broke a couple of days ago.

Replacing it with another 1080p panel seems a bit outdated now, but on the other hand my good old gtx 460 can't really handle 1440 res that well. I neither want or can quite afford to do a full upgrade yet, so I thought maybe I should get a mid tier card until maxwell/witcher hits.

Is that a good idea? I've never sold used hardware before, hell I've even used ebay... I guess to be more specific, I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how easy/difficult it is to do and how much would the value of something like 270X fall in ~8 month?

I think it would be best to wait until The Witcher 3 comes out so you can get benchmarks. If The Witcher 3 is anything like The Witcher 2, then playing at 1440p would be really demanding with or without ubersampling if CD Projekt RED decides to use that. For now, get a new monitor, preferably an IPS 1080p if you want to be safe with performance or go all out 1440p and play on lower settings or do a weird 1080p setup with a 1440p display. After The Witcher 3 comes out, get the best GPU(s) you can.

| CPU: An abacus | Motherboard: Tin foil | RAM: 2 Popsicle sticks | GPU: Virtual Boy | Case: Cardboard box | Storage: Cardboard | PSU: 3... Er... Make that 2 hamsters | Display(s): Broken glass | Cooling: Brawndo | Keyboard: More cardboard | Mouse: Jerry | Sound: 2 Cans of SpaghettiO's |
