Do SSD speeds matter?

So I'm looking into two ultrabooks at the moment, they both have SSD's, but one has 500 mb/s sequential read and 300 mb/s write while the other has 900 mb/s and 500 mb/s. Will this make a huge real work performance difference?

Yes it makes a slight difference, but any SSD is a major speed boost over a mechanical drive

 

The rest of the specifications are more important though

Not really.  I'd say seek times make a bigger difference.

They are the Dell XPS 13 (slower SSD) and the Sony Vaio Pro 13 (fast SSD)

The dell has 8gb RAM while the sony only has 4gb. A part from that, they are almost identical. The Sony Is known to has wifi problems and the Dell to have coil wine when the keyboard is backlit. The sony is also slightly lighter

Exact same price here in Aus. Both 10 point touch screens @ 1080p, both 13.3 inch. Same CPU (4200u) and 4400 integrated graphics. This will be a school laptop. Budget $1300-1400 AUD

I've looked into it, 4GB of RAM is enough and doesn't really change much, at least for the stuff I would be doing, but fair point. My main concern with the Dell was the SSD speed.

Whats your reasoning? Im just concerned about the SSD speed on the Dell, although im more worried about the Sony's Wifi problems.

Yeah, fair point. Plus, you cant upgrade the RAM on the Sony.

Get the Dell. The speeds are so much faster than a mechanical drive that you won't notice a difference unless you're doing things like moving HUGE files around.

4GB of RAM is enough for general use, for most people. But if you're a tab-oholic, or you want to do light gaming, the 8GB will make your experience more comfortable.

Get the Dell. The speeds are so much faster than a mechanical drive that you won't notice a difference unless you're doing things like huge

Yeah, I think I might get the Dell, another worry of mine is that the Dell has a extremely glossy screen. I know all touch screen notebooks do, but this one seems extremely glossy from what i've seen.

Sorry, should have stated this before. Its too big. Want a 13.3 inch. light and portable, easier to use at school.

And it doesn't have a touch screen, SSD and has a dedicated GPU (bad for battery life)

Btw, looked in macs, but im my price range they arnt 1080p or touch screen
