So i built this computer about a year ago, then about 4weeks ago switched the build to a new case and added a GTX 680 and a Neutron GTX ssd. The computer ran fine for the first 3 weeks then started to randomly freeze. The PC would stop without warning, i dont get a BSOD ordoes the computer shut off. The screen stays looking the same and i cant move the mouse or type anything. The system runs for about 3 - 5 hours before freezing. I have ran Prime 95 blend for about 4 hours and their were no errors, i couldnt run the test for anylonger because the computer froze a few minutes after i checked the test. I also ran Western Digital's diagnostic tool on my HDD and their were no errors. Please keep in mined that i cannot run prime 95 for more that a few hours because of the PC freezing.i will list the PC specs below. Please help me fix this problem, it will be greatly appreciated.

  • ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
  • Intel i7 @3930k
  • 4x8 kit DDR3 Ram
  • Neutron GTX 240GB (used as boot drive)
  • 1TB WD Caviar Black
  • 850watt Power supply
  • MSI Lightning GTX 680

Sounds similar to a graphics card issue I had with an old graphics card.

It would freeze the screen, flash between the 2 frames it's stuck between, and the audio would loop.

try running off of a different graphics card if possible to eliminate that as a possible issue

also try without the SSD as said above, if the graphics card turns out not to be the issue.

test the ram in memtest86

http://www.memtest86.com/

make sure that nothings overheating or getting close to overheating, kind of obvious.

I'd ask what the model number for the power supply is but when buying parts of this caliber I'd think it's common sense to purchase a decent power supply as well.

- CPU overheating

- GPU overheating

- RAM Issues

- Possible drive issues although you'd see more results in terms of trying to move files.

Solutions: Run a fairly intensive game for a while and then switch over to something like CoreTempGT and see what your temps are and if they're out of the ordinary. Also check your graphics card temperatures and see if anything wrong. If something is out of the ordinary; replace your thermal paste and clean out all the fans.

If you want you can also do what was suggested above and run MemTest86 for a few hours and see if anything shows. (Just install it to a CD as a bootable image then put it into your computer. Just also check your BIOS boot order if it doesn't work. I very much doubt it'll be because you're over clocked unless you're into the extreme with crazy clock rates and voltages because you've been running it for a year and I assume you haven't had issues.

If none of this works, drop a RAM chip out and MemTest again because frankly RAM is weird like that.

good Luck :)

I had the CPU overclocked to 4.0Ghz in the previous case. When i Switched to the new case I removed the overclock to make sure that the system was still stable before overclocking again. The temperatures shouldn't be a problem I use an H100 and the CPU idles around 30c and under any non-artificial load never gets above 60c. The GPU idles at 35c and under load never gets above 70c. I am thinking it is a RAM issue, i had problems with the RAM when i first built the system. I am going to test the system with some different RAM i have, then test each stick individually. If i find that the RAM is not the problem i will then check the SSD.

I have already reset the BIOS twice and it didn't help:(

Thanks for all of the help:)

This exact problem happened to me, I had 2 SSD's in Raid 0, taking them out and installing to a HDD fixed the problem. Unfortunately I didn't have any record of where I bought them from so now they are the most expensive pieces of art hanging on my wall. I still don't know what caused it, but I suspect having zero knowledge of SSD's at the time, combined with running Windows XP on them may have been the issue. Running a different SSD on Windows 8 now and haven't had any problems what so ever.
