There is a new virus that will encrypt your data (all your docs and pictures) to a 2048-bit encryption and can pass through your antivirus. The only way to recover your files is by paying them thru bitcoin or by cash ($1000).

a new "cryptolocker"

interesting

Police department computers for the town of almost 15,000 residents were reportedly infected Thursday after an officer opened what appeared to be a legitimate file attachment to an e-mail.

malicious advertisements served on scores of websites, including altervista.org, apps.facebook.com, www.theguardian.com, and ebay.in. The US is the country seeing the most infected ads, followed by the UK. So-called malvertising is a scourge that uses authentic-looking ads served over legitimate networks and sites to either trick end users into clicking on malicious links or to push attack code that exploits vulnerabilities to surreptitiously install malware.

One more benifit to Adblock. :D

Not worried in the least...  From the article, this seems to spread through infected Ads or opening the wrong attachment (I hope they at least gave that police officer a pay cut, or at worst fired him), so all I have to do, is keep using adblock and not open attachments in emails that I'm not 100% sure it's coming from who I think it's coming from. (not to mention, I mostly get PDF attachments, which I use Foxit reader in Safe mode, not the junk that is Acrobat)

Worst come to happen, I lose about 3 days worth of data, because that's how often I backup my stuff.

Oh yeah, is it possible to encrypt a hard drive that's already encrypted, with say Truecrypt or bitlocker?

How long would it take to crack that encryption would be awesome if you could use a program like folding at home to speed it up

Would most likely still take a couple hundred if not million years even with all the processing power on earth.
