I haven't watched that video in a long time, but I briefly skimmed through it. Absolutely, I use OPNsense, and I'll say its absolutely a good solution. It does have the caveat that it can be a bit technical, but I didn't know anything about it when I first set mine up and I stumbled through it.

I started with a dual LAN mini PC, and slowly upgraded (this was a few iterations into the setup):

Now I do use a mini itx machine, and everything is 10G:

My APs are mounted on my ceilings elsewhere in the house.

s still valid and should utilize it to DIY your own router?

It depends on your need. For example when Gigabit and faster internet first came out there was not a lot of routers that could handle those connections. So people built their own. Also a lot of people doing home labs use them as well.

Part of the reason Ive never dipped my toe in to the pond is I want a drop in solution, thats easy to use. Plus our electricity keeps going up in price, so I rather have a some what power efficient solution. Because with DIY routers you generally need a network swtich and a wireless AP to go with it. So basically that 1 device and make it 3.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
