Tl;DR

RAID 5 if < 12TB

RAID 6 if >= 12 TB

I was wondering if I should go with a RAID 5 or 6 array. If I was to go with the RAID 5 I would get more storage for my money but it would be less reliable and I would need to keep a second Drive on hand incase one of the drives fail. On the other hand the a 6 array it would be almost fail proof but I would loose one more drive just for backup.

If you about a cheep 6 port RAID card please let me know.

If you Have anything else to add please do so accordingly.

Thank You

Is this for home use or for a business?

If you're just using it for home use, go with raid 5.

There is no need for raid 6.

If you want a foolproof solution, buy another external HDD and run a incremental backup.

Also, this is a inexpensive 8 port raid controller.: http://www.ncix.com/detail/highpoint-rocketraid-2720sgl-8-port-20-75407.htm

It has really good reviews.

If you value your data more than the cost of an extra drive, then RAID 6 is the way to go.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei
