Two 680's or one 780

Go to solution Solved by Luckris,

No way, 2 680's demolish a single 780

post-13194-0-55407900-1402129632_thumb.j (680 sli only tiny bit better within margin)

Hey again everybody

So a friend of mine is asking me about whether he should buy another 680 for his rig or a new 780 since he wants to upgrade his PC. First I was like go for the 680, since he already got one and have found a cheap one to buy. But what do you guys think? He uses his rig for playing games like BF4 and single player games like Assassins Creed, Mass Effect etc.

Depends how much cheaper the 680 is. A 680 sli quite easily outperforms a 780.

another 680 its half the price and both of them would be the performance of a 780

1080p, 680, 1440p, or above 780. I say 780 anyway but idk.

both can handle 1440p easily

one 780, it will be better last i saw any benchmarks, but depends on how much he wants out of his graphics

sli 680s are pretty much as good as a 780

Another 680 if he can get one for dirt cheap.

Did I mention I have a 680 that I'm not using? JK, I'm not planning on selling it.

HA! I hate it when people say that. I have a 780 watercooled, with overkill amount of rads. Some games it just wont stay where I would like it which is 10 or 20 frames above 60FPS. I also just can't help myself but to turn all the settings to max. I should be able to, I have a freaking 500$ GPU.

My vote is for a 2nd 680 depending how cheap it is and, IF his PSU can already handle it.  Going from a 680 to a 780 isn't going to be a monumental upgrade, if he is wanting to stick with a single GPU, wait for 800 series, or drop a 2nd 680 in there.

I have a feeling the extra vram on the 780 helps, but I see what you mean by the age of 4k and I understand :) But personally, if OP is playing at 1080 or 1440p would recommend 680 sli. I think ._.

There are games that won't play 60fps maxed out even at 1080p. Some games are just unreasonable and maxing out your settings isn't always practical.

His next upgrade would have to be an 800 series or two 780s to really be an upgrade. Don't really know how often they upgrade, so can't say. I would still say a single 780. They come down to 350$ sometimes used in great condition, norm around 400$ used. Would be better single card solution anyway.

Myself I'm still wondering if I should upgrade my to 2 780 6gb editons, or wait a few months to see that 800 series throws out in terms of vram and cuda cores.

That's just terrible scaling...and a synthetic benchmark to boot.

I try and push myself, to upgrade my GPU every 18 months (if need be though) Umm Amd Lover on the forum just bought a used 780 Lightning (not sure about the price) but it doesn't work right :c I myself would never by second hand products (unless it is from a trusted source) but I did hear a while ago that maxwell (800 series) may be coming out Q1-Q2 next year, so it is a bit of a wait :c I'm pretty confident your 2 780's are fine, I'm pretty interested to see the type of performance the 800 series is going to be displaying!

Just shows how much 1440P can kill FPS. No idea why Linus said 590 was almost same as Titan.... He's old so I'll let it slip.

Where/when did he say that?

590 Quad SLI only gets 35.6 FPS on that chart. The thing is clearly bottlenecked by its vram.

Holy **** you guys are awesome...

I was away for like 15 minutes and then you've all given good points of pros and cons for both cases. Thanks a bunch everyone, you're the best! :D

EDIT: Just keep them coming xD

and a lot of people are sleeping right now. :3

well for one its' 1440p, and two.. well yeah, but it gives a base to show how cards perform.

I always buy used parts. I think only my case is not a sued part. Everything works fine. It's just a matter of being real careful, and know who and what your buying. Get all the details. It dose take time though, but taking caution pays off.

I would not randomly buy a part from someone saying they got tired of it, or just gives some BS reason.

when he was upgrading his rig to the titan from the 590. and he said it somewhere else... He also said you cant SLI 2 cards with different vram, but you can..Like I said he's old.
