Android version of this?

So, in upcoming ios 8,they added a feature to the status bar that let's you respond without going to the app. So if someone texts you, you can stay in the app and text them back from the status bar. I want to know if there is something like that but for Android. I'm running 4.4.2

I've actually been looking for something like that on Android, but the closest thing is the button that brings up the list of windows you currently have open. It switches very quickly for me, so no complaints (using Moto X). I'd still like that feature iOS8 will have, though. Sounds like it'll be cool.

it was a part of the old SMS app in 4.3.1 at the latest, quick reply, don't know why they made hangouts necessary.

They didn't make it mandatory. In fact, it's even easier now to run third-party messaging apps, like EvolveSMS, which should have what the OP wants.

Does evolvesms let me respond straight from the status bar and not have to go into the app? That's what I'm looking for

Just download a SMS application that does that..

It has a reply button in the notification which can create an overlay for replying.

SMS Popup displays a popup reply box when you receive texts. It can also be set to override the lockscreen so you don't need to unlock your phone just to reply, which is handy. No need to open the status bar or the message app.
