780 vs 780 Ti for 1440p

Merackon

Hi,

I am not sure whether this has turned up before, but the forum search didn't produce any results which seemed to have relevance, and a general Google search provided similar style results.

I use a 2560x1440p monitor for playing games and doing photo editing etc, with a 1900x1200 as a secondary monitor.

Would a 780 be a better investment over a 780 Ti?

If so would it be worth getting a 780 with 6gb VRAM or just the standard 3gb version, I often hear that the higher the resolution the higher the RAM blah blah blah?

Which specific card would people suggest, staying away from Gigabyte please...

Or should I just wait it out until the Maxwell cards?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

I'd get two 780's for 1440p, but that isn't what you asked.

Save up for the 780ti and overclock it like hell.

Just get a 3GB model. Unless you do some crazy modding in a game like Skyrim, you won't touch that vRAM.

Asus, MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte (why don't you like them? Perfectly fine company)

If it has to be Nvidia, get a single 780 Ti. (Although I'd rather have two GTX 780's)

I'd recommend a 290X for 1440p though, they perform better at higher resolutions.

My 3gb 780ti is doing a fantastic job at 1440p, it can handle everything on very/high ultra, with AA at 60fps

Yeah, unfortunately, my funding does not allow for the dual option, I will probably get another 780 Ti down the line if they drop in price a bit, the only reason I am doing this is because the 670's are still way too expensive for me to consider an Sli option, I don't want to spend £300 more on a 670 to compliment the one I already have in my system.

I like my PhysX Games...

HAHAHAHAHAH "I LIKE PHYS X MY GAMES

Like which one? Because there are so little games that actually ran Phys X.

Also PhysX can also run on your CPU in most games that feature that Phys X.

If you wan't good gaming at a higher res you are looking at 780 with more than 3 gb or any of the R9 290 or 290X.

That 3GB is limiting in future games also limiting in Skyrim with lots of mods. That's one the reason i sold my 780 ti stock and bought an r9 290.

For example Watch_Dogs which yes its unoptimized for PC since its a shitty Console Port.

But on 780 or 780 Ti's that have not more than 3 GB struggle since the game requires a huge chunk of vram, which in turn gives you stutter.

A friend of my has 4 780 ti's in SLI and he has Lag and stuttering with his 780 Ti's  he said he may put waterblocks on his Titans.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 4,6GHZ OC MB: MSI Mpower z77  RAM: Kingston Genesis 1600Mhz CL9 16GB

GPU: ASUS R9 290 Direct CUII  PSU: Corsair AX 860

No problem, also thats a typo, I will fix it HAHA thanks

I dont run any skrim mods and have had no problem with any game OTHER than watch dogs. Which is a little stuttery at 1440p. However at 1080p I can play it on ultra with HBAO+ and TXAA, and it runs very smooth, I play it on my TV with my controller because it just plays better that way

So far this is the only game I cannot play well in 1440p, so I assume this is the VRAM issue. Will probably upgrade to titan blacks or 6gb 780tis if they come (or 880 series as soon as I can)

BUT, I am happy with my 780ti, considering its the cheapest one available pretty much too

Yeah the 780 Ti is great i was just not satisfied with it in Skyrim. And as it turns out it was good for Watch_Dogs Too.

I wish Nvidia would make higher GB gpus.

AMD HD 7900 Series all of them 3 GB

Nvidia Kepler most of them have 2 GB.

Imho they should have made an 4 GB 780 or 780 Ti at release.

Agreed its really its Achilles heel and it never needed to be there in the first place
