Apps exist for this, but require the drive to be able to spin up. Usually photos and video are unrecoverable if they are larger than the data cluster size. You need to try and pull the files off in the way they were stored first. Recovery tools often only find the thumbnail caches intact.

I would probably suggest diskdrill, but I just want to emphasize that:

- recovery of a disk requires that you do not write to it when it's in a damaged state, so do not allow windows to format the drive, do not try to re-write the partition table, don't even run chkdsk until you've tried the tools. You basically need to scan the drive un-mounted from the OS.

- recovery of photos and video, intact, is difficult and often does not recover more than the beginning of the file. So do not assume just because the tool says it found it, that it found all of it.

Data recovery is generally only good at recovering files that are like less than 64KB, and it's easier to recover data from non-encrypted FAT16/FAT32 (floppy disks and hard drives from before Windows XP era) than it is to recover them from SSD's at all, and drives that are NTFS, UFS, HFS+ or APFS.

Hello guys. I have an issue with my external hdd, whenever I plug it in my PC the drive doesn't show up in my computer. Later I went to disk management and saw an error named 'cyclic redundancy error'. I saw in yt that u need to backup the hdd but is there any solution which doesn't require backup and simply make the HHD show up again without formatting?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

CRC fails might indicate a faulty cable.

Not particularly. CRC errors in mechanical drives usually mean the drive is dead already, or something loose in the external chassis.

Like with USB powered drives (no power supply) often the problem is simply the USB cable, however if you've ever dropped the drive, it could pull the SATA edge connector off on the inside. On powered drives, any error could indicate the power supply or the controller board inside is dead.

Either of these can be resolved by taking the external drive chassis off the drive and plugging it directly into the desktop and backup the data and then replace the drive chassis if the drive its still good. Or buy another drive+chassis.

I will be honest, most external drive chassis are cheap junk, and they will work for a few years before the controller board fails.

Welcome to the forums!
*how* are you plugging in the drive? Is this an external drive in an enclosure plugged in with a USB cable? Or are you moving around an internal drive?
How much have you moved it around?
What does crystalDiskInfo say?

Thanks for the warm welcome. Going back on the topic, just bought a new sata to usb converter and didnt scan the disk using CrystalDiskInfo.

Is this a 2.5 or 3.5 inch drive? Can you plug this drive directly into your motherboard sata instead of using a usb converter? Do you hear the drive spin up?
