SteamOs broke Rog Ally?

But you should be able to shrink the partition on the live USB and create a new one to which you can move the files. Or use a USB hub and attach another drive. Or use an SD card. Or connect to wifi and upload them to network/cloud storage. Or, again, just pull the back plate and grab the drive.

So I recently installed steamos on my rog and i ran out of free space. So now it doesnt boot and stuck on asus rog logo. I cleared some storage with a live usb but still same issue. I am comfortable with reinstalling the os (althought would prefer not to if possible) but i need to recover some files and not entirely sure how to go about doing it. Looking forward for your replies, thanks in advance.

I know it might not be secure, yeah vibecoding is cool but we shouldnt do smt unless we understand it and etc. thx but these disclaimers get old quick. maybe we shall be reminded frequently for we are stupid but i dont work at a nuclear powerplant.

If have access to a PC with a 2nd m.2 slot, you could probably just plug it in and grab whatever data you needed. You could even just use a m.2-usb enclosure for that.
Though, that won't work if you bitlockered it

what do you mean that doesn't work? If you have a computer with an OS, you should be able to mount the Ally's SSD as an extra drive and access it.

oh you mean that, i thought you were talking about connecting it via usb. yeah dont wanna take it apart really

You may well have to to recover the files. I'm not sure it's even possible, but you might be able to boot a linux liveUSB, mount the internal drive, and pull the files off that way

yea i can mount but how do i get the files? my best guess is plug another usb and transfer the files to that.

but do i have to basically reinstall the os now? And was the problem no remaining space?

No clue. I don't even know that the Ally can run SteamOS. But if it didn't have enough space (pretty much any tutorial should have told you how much space you needed), that is definitely *a* problem

So you can boot a linux live USB on the Ally, mount the internal drive, and browse its file structure? If so, you have a few options:
If you have a micro SD card, you could just move them to that.
If the wifi drivers work, you could email them or upload them to a NAS or cloud storage.
If you have a USBC dock you could plug in another USB storage device and move them there
Or you could probably just move them onto the LiveUSB's storage.

yea the live usb doesnt retain the files but i will probably move them to an sd card if theres no other ways than reinstalling the os

You can probably shrink the liveUSB's  partition, then mount the spare space which won't wipe itself
Also, I'm pretty sure that if you boot a live USB, the root directory is actually in RAM, but you should still see the USB in /mnt

Weird. It should auto mount the disks it sees. nothing shows up if you `ls /mnt` ? I guess you should still be able to `lsblk -f` to show all mountable devices, then just use the mount command to mount what you need.
