So my dad has an amd athlon x2 4600+ in pc that he uses right now. I know that cpu is outdated but i was just wondering if there was any am2 cpu's that would be worth upgrading to. I still don't really know what to get him for fathers day and i figured if i could get a cheap cpu that is better than the one he has i could get by.

Thanks :)

It would depend on the board, some are limited by what TDP CPU they can support. If you can find out what motherboard is in his PC we can tell you the best chip it can handle.

If I am 100% Honest with you, AM2 hasn't got any real "Upgrades" left in its lineup, In Fact I find it a challenge to find any on any of the websites I buy parts on.

Perhaps upgrade him to a small SSD if you can as an SSD Will make stuff faster even if you can't make the CPU Faster.

Main Machine:  16 inch MacBook Pro (2021), Apple M1 Pro (10 CPU, 16 GPU Core), 512GB SDD, 16GB RAM

Gaming Machine:  Acer Nitro 5, Core i7 10750H, RTX 3060 (L) 6GB, 1TB SSD (Boot), 2TB SSD (Storage), 32GB DDR4 RAM

What does he do with his PC? My dad is still using his old HP with an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ and it still works fine. If your dad is like mine, they don't really care about the actual processing power of their PC, just that it "feels" fast, in turning on, opening programs, etc. and for that get an SSD

Also, I just looked and the HP's that we have are pretty much identical besides the CPU which isn't that big of a difference. Yeah an SSD does wonders.

CPU support list, some of these might require a bios update depending on your current bios

So from what i can see getting a new cpu for that pc is pointless and i would be better off getting a ssd. Any suggestions on a good ssd?

Crucial M500: $69 for 120GB, $110 for 240GB

Samsung 840 EVO: $84 for 128GB, $134 for 256GB

Here's a 760K build for example: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nyK84D
