I need to buy a dedicated server for snmp/logging for a mid size network with like 200 nodes.
I was looking at a supermicro x12 barebones + cpu and ram for $1513, intel 4310T and 64gb of cheap ram
or if i go older a x11 is around $500.

is it really worthwhile to spend so much more on 2021 hardware versus 2018 hardware?
anything newer is completely out of budget.

That's a whole lotta computer for not a lot of work. You could probably get away with a salvage X99 board and some 20$ CPUs

No, probably not

5950X/4090FE primary rig  |  1920X/1070Ti Unraid for dockers  |  200TB TrueNAS w/ 1:1 backup

How mission-critical is this server going to be?

If downtime is not an option and you're on a budget, I'd recommend a couple-generations-old "real" server like a Dell PowerEdge R540 or R730. ("Precision Rack" and VxRail models are the same hardware.) Parts are cheap and plentiful for those.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

well this is the device that tells me when other devices break or a problem happens. If it doesnt do its job, nothing happens, but it would be extremely convenient for it to always do its job.

Idk what the difference between dell and supermicro are, they are both real servers and about the same price.

yeah id basically only be buying newer for perceived longevity.
My only other thoughts are I will maybe use it for other stuff in the future so newer and more performance is potentially nice, but idk about 3x the cost nice.
