Hi need some advice rethinking which cpu to buy for my first build, i intended to buy amd 9800x3d but wondering if there is a better option, need the cpu for general windows use and multitasking but also want excellent gaming results, if i had the money i would go for the 9950x3d but its currently about £200 more than the 9800x3d so too much. i like the gaming benchmarks on the 9800x3d but wonder if getting more cores would help me in windows and if i could save some money somewhere without losing much gaming performance.

current expected specs :
9800x3d?
msi b850 edge ti
64gb ram
1/2 tb m.2 drive
850w/1000w psu
9070 xt

Like general web browsing and such? No, they'll be sitting around doing nothing for the majority of their life. If you were doing something more along the lines of large code compiles, video editing, and other actually CPU heavy workloads, then sure it might make more sense to go for a higher core count chip, but for just basic windows use and multitasking the 9800X3D is more than plenty.

Heck, you would probably be just as well served by the 7800X3D which is usually a bit cheaper if you want to save a bit more money.

thanks for the reply, think i would choose the 9800x3d over the 7800x3d as there is only about £70 difference at the moment, my current pc has 6 cores but i not good enough for the multitasking i do so i thought more cores might help, i run multiples browsers with many multiple tabs at the same time and also have other programs open, thats why i am getting the 64gb but i thought the more cores might help, also have seen in benchmarks the 9800x3d not doing very well in windows apps like winrar and 7zip and other apps so thought there might be a better cpu, maybe there not without spending an extra £200 on the 9950x3d.

When it comes to gaming the 9950X3D is at best identical to the 9800X3D. Not worth it in my opinion. I'd likely even drop the 3D for 1440p and just spend more on the GPU instead.

Then I'm not sure you'll see much of a difference in gaming between a 9800X3D and a 9700X which is way cheaper

And for other tasks it'll be the same if not faster

hi thanks for the replies, 70% of the time i will be in windows with multiple browsers open and multiple tabs within each browsers and be moving files in the background and watching videos etc, when i do play games i want to be able to play them at their best and not worry about low fps. just wondered if the 9800x3d was my best option, been sorting out my pc build now for a number of months and the 9800x3d was always my 1st choice but maybe there is a better option?.

The 9950X3D is close enough to the 9800X3D to be withing margin of error at times for gaming.  So if you truly want peace of mind, just get it.

It may be overkill, it may even be half-unused, but you want another option... there it is.  It's basically a 9800X3D with a 9700X strapped to it for more funzies.

Personally, your use case is basic shit.  Multiple windows?  Uhm, all of us.  Multiple tabs in each?  Uhm, all of us.  Moving files in background?  Most of us, though I am curious just how much random organizing you do on a regular.  I DL Plex files to my gaming machine and then copy to the server, and that impacts my 7800X3D not at all.  Watching videos while doing all this?  Yeah, all of us.

I think people need to get it out of their heads that what THEY do is somehow special or different than the rest of the world.  It's just what everyone does.

I'm not trying to be a dick here (tho I am or may not  be successful), but any modern CPU can do what you're explaining. You don't need anything remotely powerful.

thanks for your reply, what you say makes sense, if the 9950x3d was less than the £200 difference over the 9800x3d then i might consider but too much of a difference for something i might not make use of, at the moment just waiting for my psu to come back in stock so doing a bit of revaluating while waiting for that, just wondering if i am making the right choice with the 9800x3d, looking at 9700x,9900x and seeing if they are suitable, been looking for benchmarks for the cpu's with the 9070 xt at 1440p but not many, they are mostly with the nvidia cards, not sure how much fps i would lose by going for the 9700x or the 9900x compared to the 9800x3d.
