I recently purchased a Minisforum UM890 Pro, and the Oculink dock. I have a spare PSU, though I'll be buying a SFX PSU and getting custom, much shorted cables made, for a more sane setup.

This is replacing my Steam Deck, mostly for trips away from home where I drive. I decided to just take my Steam Deck if I fly anywhere.

So, I have two options. Option 1 is to buy a GPU just for the dock. Option 2 is to buy a new GPU for my gaming rig, move the 6800XT down to my editing rig, and move the 6750XT from my editing rig to the eGPU dock.

Remember, this is just going to be used when I'm on vacation, when I'm home, there won't be a dock in use.

Also, keep in mind, my gaming PC is in a Meshify 2 Compact case, and I have limited space for the GPU in it, though I have found a 9070XT that would fit, and is a *cough* reasonable price.

Also also, I am not running Windows on my mobile gaming setup, it's running CachyOS right now, though that might change at any time. I'm a bit... Unsure how the dedicated/onboard setup works, but I think I can disable the onboard in BIOS on boot, and it should resolve most issues that way.

Final info is the monitor: It's going to be piped through a 144hz 1080P mobile 15.6" display (it fits absolutely perfect in a backpack designed for a laptop).

Option 3, buy a 16" gaming laptop.

Absolutely not. Uh, biggest reasons being: My Azorpa portable display is just as good as, if not better than, most laptop screens. I have nowhere to store a monster laptop, either. I would have to fabricobble an under desk mount for it, and honestly, that's more work than I'm willing to do. And finally, I was able to buy a barebones minisforum computer and put the RAM and SSD in it that I wanted. Can't really do that with a laptop. Plus, I'd still have to get an eGPU, and figure out the GPU situation, unless I want to have a laptop with NVidia graphics, which I just... Nope. That one's not gonna happen lol

hand-me-downs and upgrading is always the way to go. It's weird to think of something you use as primary becoming secondary , but it always ends up being the better option to do.

It's also really beneficial because I already know what connectors I'll be dealing with, ie, an 8 pin and a 6 pin on the 6750XT.
