So some security lessons hopefully learned: 

  • Email is a terrible 2FA method and it is misleading for services that offer it as such. SMS is nearly as terrible. Use TOTP, Yubikey, or passkeys instead. 
  • Never use "login with Google" or the like, it just means if your main account gets hacked, everything is hacked. 
  • Never type your credentials in a VM with sketchy software. Better yet, just don't use sketchy software ever. 
  • Use a password manager that is not tied to any other account and has its own login and 2FA.
  • Don't trust cloud storage. If you're gonna use it, always at least have an offline backup of your files somewhere on a physical medium in case your cloud storage provider just decides to deny you access, as Microsoft did here.

Unfortunately, most people have not learned any of these lessons.
