Storage for video editing

Hey guys!

 

I’ve gotten a new long term project to work on where I’ll be filming and editing a YouTube project for some people. This is the first big project where I’ll be using my own equipment, have previously worked at production companies where they have big servers etc. 
the people I’m working for pretty much just handed me a Lacie HDD which was unbearable to work from so I transferred to my t7 that I usually use for weddings and things like that. Problem is I shoot close to 1tb every time we film, so memory stacks up quickly. 

 

do you have any recommendations for what type of storage I should look into getting for this type of work? 
should I install a second nvme for temporary storage and then have a big external drive? I’m not super read up on this as I’ve always just have been handed material pretty much before.

just a standard large ssd seems like all you need. just need something fast with a lot of space you can edit off of. if it doesn;t have to be external then no reason to make it external

Yeah, it doesn't need to be external but I'm thinking it will add up quick being just too much material so I think it would be more convenient to maybe have a couple external ones? Instead of having to switch an installed drive?

Are you looking for long term storage, or just for the time you work on? Sounds like each project is 1TB... so it can be a few dozen TB in total????? 

It really depends on how much you need. Is the 1TB raw footage, and you only need to keep the tiny final product, or do you also need to store the raw footage? 

 

For while you work on, a fast NVME SSD of a few TB will be best since it is fast. And for storing use a DAS/NAS. Plus you also need backup.

I'd say it'sa bit of both, it's a house building youtube show so it will be a couple of months of filming and probably that I need to be able to go back to some clips to show like "oh remember when we put up the first wall" when they're having their first dinner in the house etc. They want to publish one episode per week. 

 

I picked up another nvme 2tb that could be used for temporary storage for the current project. I'll make a document keeping track of what different material to make it easier for myself when having to go back to older material I guess! 

 

Would a NAS with sata disks on it be faster than using Lacie (or something like it)?

You have 10Gbit?

The speed of the NAS will depend on how many HDD etc. but network speed may be the limiting factor. 

 

If yo are the only user, direct access (DAS) also can work and be fast.
