Hey all,

I have the main board of my framework and I had an idea, to build a simple and low performance NAS from it (mostly for backups).

The main board I have is i5-1240P.

I was thinking to buy an adapter from M.2 --> SATA3.0 Expansion Card 6 Ports (for example https://www.amazon.de/-/en/dp/B0B6RQHY4F/?coliid=I2XVXQD0GFPTKG&colid=1B89RFY2KJDBX&psc=1)

I'll connect 4X4TB HDDs.

And of course I'll get a PSU for the HDDs.

I'll probably chose UNRAID, just because I know it and like it.

What do you think? Could it work or is it a waste of time & money?

Tnx!

I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work; Unraid runs on far less capable hardware than that. The thing should sip power, but as a tradeoff you're stuck with the inherent expansion limitations of using a laptop motherboard as a starting point.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

recycling old hardware to build tiny servers or NAS is always a good idea, at the end of the day, you're simply using a full laptop without the screen and some "external drivers" so to speak, it's a setup that will for sure work without a doubt

i myself scrapped out a couple old xeon CPUs from a server i had at work and just by buying an old supermicro dual CPU board  and a PSU i've made up a home server, it's not powerful, but i've spent a fraction of what a server would cost.

I'm actually diving into this from the opposite end with a new manufacture/salvaged chipset X99 dual socket board. Gonna learn me some proxmox!
