CPU runs hot when rendering

it's probably a little high on the temp side but you're still trying to tame an i9 14th gen... it's basically a nuclear powerplant core under full load that you're trying to cool down, we're talking at about a peak of 253w of power sucking just from the cpu

For my use case I decreased PL2 to 200W and now under load temps are a stable 80~c. Fans are a bit loud still but that's adjustable.

CPU - i9 14900kf

AIO - Arctic Cooler 3 360

GPU - 4070

The problem I have encountered is that when I render something in Arnold (or anything) my CPU temps spike to 100c. Now it's okay for IPR as it spikes for a second or so, however if I were to render something for longer than that it would stay at 100c.

I understand that 14 series are all power hungry and run hot... you live and you learn.

To alleviate the issues brought by the 14900kf I have undervolted, lowered P-cores, LLC and LLD just to get the CPU stable idle.

I have recently upgraded my old CoolerMaster 240mm AIO to this new 360mm Arctic Cooler. I applied this myself.

What I want to know is it something I am missing from the BIOS, wrong thermal paste application/thermal paste in general (I followed steps said on AIO instructions), is it an Arnold problem (I can lower threads being used by the renderer, however it still spikes to 100c), and lastly is it too late...

Considering it's my job to use the software and render, I need this to be manageable, and if there's a quick and dirty way I believe I can do it myself. But it's getting to the point where I'm tempted to hand it off to a technician and pay for it to be *fixed*.

Any clarifications can be given.

Any advice or recommendations are appreciated.

Fro what I remember reading, while your temps are on the high side, it's not abnormal for that CPU, it normally peaks that high or and even higher when playing games and since rendering can be CPU intensive, depending on the application used,  I won't worry too much. As long as there's good airflow, of course and the ambient room temperature isn't high.

Although, correct me if I'm wrong but, running 100c on a render that will take hours would be death. An exaggeration maybe but I want to be safe and stable without problems of deg.

Just looked it up and Intel claims that its supported to run at 100 degrees, but from the comments water block cooling is highly recommended. also good ventilation is also recommended.

This information comes from a query on Intel's own website.

I would have thought the new 360mm cooler would help, but I suppose not.

I’ve added more fans to my case too.

I’m still going to reapply the thermal paste, when I have the time.

You mean you have the "Liquid Freezer III 360". Those are really good! Unless you have some OCing going on in BIOS, no way it should be hitting 100c unless that's normal for that chip.

Are you sure you have the AIO mounted properly?

Heh, that’s why I got it! I’m going to flash the newest BIOS and go through the settings again, although I’m sure I don’t have anything outstanding, all settings I have changed are to decrease power consumption.

14 series is notorious for power suck and heat source, but I don’t think it’s this bad…

Before this i’ll remount it, and reapply some paste.

100C is withing spec for that CPU and it should be able to run at hose tempts for years without a issue. You can lower the power limited and clocks so it runs cooler, but I don't see a reason to unless your having a issue. Those tempts are kinda normal on that CPU. How many watts is it pulling unlder load? Its the radiater water getting hot?
