Hi there,

i got this old gaming pc from someone, and heres the Problem. The Pc was running when i got it.

But at Home i got no Beep, no Boot, and no Display. So i tryed to find Solutions, I replaced the BIOS Battery and the RAM with working Parts(Just in Case), i double checked all Connections, i took the GPU out, and Back in. Finaly after 3 hours i heared a Beep! I did a new Install of Windows, and everything seemed fine. Then i turned it off, and now i have the same Issue (No Beep, no Boot) as before... I tryed to to use different RAM slots, and even a new Harddrive, but i just cant get it booting anymore. 6 hours in now... i guess i need some help. ;D

the system in question is a I7 on a asus motherboard with 16gb Ram, a gtx 1060, and a ssd. i got it cheap, it should fit my needs, and yes i kind of took the risk of buying crap,

but i have no clue what else i can do now without spare parts to test. Did i missed to check something?

Maybe dis-assemble EVERYTHING, then put it back together? And also, replace the CMOS battery. Does the CPU have integrated graphics?

that's weird, so if you clear the CMOS everything works and after one boot everything dies? this sounds like a weird BIOS issue to me... is there any new bios update for the board? maybe this will fix

i am not saying that i really know what i am doing here. But i unpugged it, took the battery out, waited around 5-10 minutes and then i placed a "new" battery from another pc in. because i know this one works.

since my first post here, i was able to start it once again with a different ssd, and so i started a new installation on the new hardrive hoping that was the problem, but this time the PC just restarted during the installation and got stuck again. And It was not the normal restart from the installation, more midway.

and about updating, since that thing is from "some dude" i havent yet connected it to any network. i work just with a stick right now and try to make it running again. 😅 sorry.

Since you already checked the CMOS battery, I'd test with another PSU (power supply) now. These contain many capacitors that can lose performance/integrity with time. As an alternative, you can test your PSU in another computer too.

Good luck !

The parts are probably fine what seems like the possible culprit could be the power supply. Doesn't sound like there is consistent power being fed, have you re seated every PSU connection on both the parts and the PSU? Also if you are plugging into a power bar, try plugging directly into the wall. Little weird things that seem like nothing usually cause the most headache. Try these let me know if it helps and if it doesn't let's go from there 🙂

it is wierd.. i just was able to do the install and all the updates in the last hour, without any problems, everything was stable and fine, and cooled... then i turned it off again. and again the same thing, no boot beed... i even holded the case in place while pressing the button, so that nothing "should" wiggle in a bad position... 🙄 and i dont have another PSU right now. but if it is the PSU, why is it then running stable for an hour+ untill i manualy turn it off again?

Edit2:

When the system restarted several times during the installation, and the updates, i booted just fine. 🤡

yes i tryed it just yet, directly in the wall and resettled any cable i could find. i also tryed another power cord.

For Edit 1: dying power supplies can do some funny things because it can be a multitude of things wrongs from something as simple as a loose inner connection to a blown capacitor or severed circuit board rail.

For Edit 2: that's fantastic news! Is everything working as it should now?

No sorry, it didnt changed anything. i could do all this, but when i turned off the pc normaly i was not able to restart it.

EDIT: i switched back to the other ssd... i got a bios! sounds unhealthy...:

Hey that's exciting you got to bios! Try reconfiguring power settings in bios to see if that helps:)

no i just got to this startscreen, system halted, had to restart, same problem as before. should i try to look at the CPU directly?

It's worth looking at, take it out clean all the paste off it and around it and inspect the socket then re seat it. If it's getting to bios then it means the cpu is working but something is interrupting the system. Still seems like a PSU issue tho, it's probably worth looking into a new power supply at least just for testing, you can always return it if you don't need it afterwards if you get it from a store, if you're able to. Do you have any other PCs at home you could maybe swap power supplies?

I just find it wierd that, whenever i change something like the ram, or for example put out the gpu, i get to bios once, then nothing again. if i put it back in i get to bios once, but its always the same one boot problem...

i resetted the bios to default, same problem.

the only other PSU i have is a old 500W PSU, but i am not shure if that is capable of running the setup, and i dont want to risk loosing my only working other pc for unsafe experiments. 😄

That's a totally reasonable worry lol so what it sounds like is happening is that it's trying to fire up but it's hitting a wall caused by power limiting. What I would do is just run your PC bare bones like cpu mobo Ram SSD and GPU if you don't have integrated and use that 500w PSU to power it up, it will be enough to power everything up since you're not under any load and it won't brick anything either, this will rule out if the PSU is the issue. Your computer is probably triggering a safety shutoff at that same point everytime due to unreliable power delivery. Now if you do get a boot go straight into bios first and have a look at your power delivery settings and make sure they're set to normal and not performance or saving mode then try to boot into windows.

i guess its not the PSU... 😞 then i guess i am pretty much done, because a new mobo is to expensive for a pc that old. could i at least fit the CPU in my old PC? 1150 socket vs 1155 socket.. let me guess, they are not compatible? 😬

I wouldn't call it game over yet, could you take as clear of a picture as you can of the cpu socket without the cpu in it? You may have a slightly bent pin that is causing this

looks good to me, but i cleaned it carefully with a very soft brush and alcohol, it had some paste on the corner plastik, but still no changes after putting in back together.

How does the socket on the motherboard look? Slightly bent pins in the LGA socket itself, also the bios battery you put in, is it a new one or one from another board?

everything looks good, i cant find any damage on the pins, or the board itself. the battery was from another board but i measured 3.2V on it so guess its fine?

Try disconnecting your case power, restart, ect from your board and jump starting it

for some reason my instincts suggest the BIOS chip could be faulty.

If you were able to get into the BIOS were you able to navigate around and was all the text correct?

Changing hardware is bringing up the BIOS in a different manner than if you hit a key to enter it, that may be why you can get into it when changing hardware.

The "hit & miss" nature of your issue reminds me of dealing with a faulty starter in a car, works until it stops on that one dead spot.

what could i do about this?

When it was running, it was running just normal. No Bugs, No Lags, No Display Errors, neter in BIOS or Windows.

But my "new" Problem is this: I did... "something" while trying a different mobo/psu or at some other point... anyway, NOW it just starts for 1-2 seconds shuts down and starts again. this seems to repeat.

🙈
