In my experience, most cell modems with USB ports do allow you to use them over the USB port instead of (or in addition to) WiFi or Ethernet. They work basically like any other USB network adapter.

My desktop is currently connected to my older 4G router (HUAWEI E5770) via microUSB. 

I never got any signs/it never occurred to me this might transfer network data along with power.

Can it ?

I have absolutely no idea. Try it! You might have to install a driver to make it work.

That's not a good source for my question.

In my manual they seem to say there are two ways to communicate, wifi and USB-C.

(You could still be right though, I'll know more when I get it)

I power the device and get data via one USB-C cable.

(it doesn't even need the stated 2A, I don't have them 🙂)
