Hi guys, I am looking at building a new system this summer, and I have a question to ask about motherboards. What is the difference between 990FX and 970 motherboards? I have been looking for motherboards and keep seeing those chipsets. I do have a feeling that it pertains to motherboard features, but features aren't a big deal for me. I am just looking for a motherboard that won't catch on fire and has the ability to overclock my processor. If someone can answer my question, it would be greatly appreciated

If anyone is interested, here's a 970 motherboard I am looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130637&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

the main difference is the power phase which provides power to the CPU 990FX can support up to 140W CPUs

and depending on the CPU in question like the FX8350 or even the FX9550, you must only use the 990FX chipset based motherboards

point taken but only with a BIOS update although I wonder how a board can output more than 200W from a normal socket

What makes it better for overclocking? Not bashing, just curious.

More power phases.

A lot of 970 boards only have a little bit extra over the bare minimum for 8xxx chips.

suggest going for the cheapest 990FX board you can find online or in the nearest shop

and stock for AM3+ boards are getting low

Some boards have 125w max TDP and no EUFI bios (32 and 64MBit) does that matter?

plug and play or just tweak the BIOS settings?

Asus released BIOS updates to all of their 990FX R2.0 boards to support the 9370 & 9590.

Both should work straight out of the box without a BIOS update anyway because they're based on the 8350 silicone.

990FX has more PCIe lanes, more Sata 6GB/s, better power delivery and generally more I/O options.

If you're going for something like an FX 8320 or FX 6300 an Asus M5A97 R2.0 would be completely capable of handling most overclocks you throw at it and at a very attractive price point.

If you can afford to spend more I'd recommend going with an M5A99FX R2.0, you'll get better power delivery & Two PCIe 16X slots rather than one 16x and on 4x for SLI support & better CrossfireX scaling.

I'd recommend that you actually upgrade your CPU rather than the motherboard, sell your 8120 and get an 8320. 15% faster per clock & overclocks about 400mhz higher on the same cooling.

You have the Pro and Evo version, I found a review where the Evo had trouble keeping a FX-8350 on 4,5Ghz because of VRM's cooling.

Do you think this would be an issue with my FX-8120 or is this person just unlucky?

Is it really worth it to upgrade from a 8120 on a 970 board to a 8320 on a 990FX board?

I don't really like spending money when I don't get a performance increase.

if you think the performance gains from changing to 8350 and 990FX is not great

how about looking at the Intel i5 Core series?

As a AMD fan here, the FX is going six feet under given that AMD is pushing APU and FM2+ instead
