Probably comes down to the wireless radio and/or what drivers are available for it.

The first one shows a particular SoC, while the second on just says "Generic". So likely much less support for special configurations, since the OS doesn't know its actual capabilities.

I would recommend to ask that on the OpenWRT forums: https://forum.openwrt.org/

Maybe it's as easy as recompiling it with the appropriate modules. Maybe the card isn't officially supported yet, due to a lack of FOSS drivers.

It's been a while since I've used OpenWRT, but I remember using a kernel-like text interface to select modules and compiling it, to get its size down enough to be able run on my old router.

No custom OS anymore, I'm afraid. I have a cable modem/router, and OpenWRT doesn't include drivers for the cable modem part of it, since there are no open drivers for that.
