Screen randomly glitches when in use

I have a friend with a weird issue I have never seen before. The screen goes blank and shows some lines across the screen. I have attached a picture of the fault.

 

I was wondering is this caused by gfx card or is it the monitor?

does he have another screen he can connect to his pc?

No. Are you saying it could be either? Whilst the glitch appears, the pc remains on till I turn it off

it could be either so it's the process of elimination. when does the screen go black?

It randomly goes blank whilst she's doing her shopping online. Sometimes the picture magically reappears as well. I witnessed that happening.

that that would most likely be the gpu, have you tried reinstalling the gpu drivers?

No I didn't know graphics drivers could make the screen act like this. I thought it either works or it doesn't.

 

Ok I will try reinstall the drivers
