Is it wise to buy i5-12600K instead of i5-13600K or i5-14600K and would there be much difference in performance? Also, would there be much difference in performance with i5-12600K and DDR4 or DDR5?

why even bother with the 12600k when am5 exists and the 7500f/7600 demolishes the poor thing in singlecore whilst having a nuch better upgrade path

its especially stupid if you pair it with ddr5 as the one benifit of 1700 being able to use cheaper ddr4 is nullified so you are basically just buying crap that performs worse than similarly priced am5 with no upgrade path ontop of that

essentially shooting yourself in the foot for no reason

For basic office use, building a PC is oftentimes not the most cost-effective option. You might be able to find a mini-PC or used Optiplex for cheap that would more than suffice for basic office usage.

It all depends what office PC means.

For basic tasks USFF machine is perfect.  ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/usff-pc/s?k=usff+pc )

If it needs dedicated GPU or more power for something then perhaps worth building a custom PC. And for majority office tasks the 12600K is more than adequate.

I don't want a USFF machine. I want a PC with standard parts which can easily be replaced if needed.

12600K is probably enough, just depends what is the use case of an office PC.

If prioritizing price to performance, then DDR4 is perhaps better.

If speeds, then of course 14600K with DDR5.

The price difference between 12600K and 14600K is quite small though.

Then I would still agree that the 12600K is actually overkill for the use. If you really want to build it yourself, here's what I would consider:
