CPU Upgrade Inquiry

Hello folks. Question for you all. I currently have a 3700x cpu and saw on Amazon that the 5800xt is on sale for $130 shipped. I have a 1080ti gpu (ancient, I know) and was curious if it’s even worth messing with swapping CPU’s given the dated card? I do light gaming and some light video encoding. Thanks!

For light gaming and light video encoding, no, probably not, but is it meaningfully better? Yes.

What is light gaming?  Are you running into issues with the 3700x?

 

Probably not a worthwhile upgrade for you, for just light gaming.

 

Unless light gaming means something different than I mean it.

Occasional gaming. Mostly single player stuff but every blue moon I’ll play something multiplayer. I should also note I run 1440p monitors.

That doesn't explain "light gaming".  Is light gaming:

 

1.  You game not often?

 

2.  The games you play are light in resources needs?

 

I'm looking at this as #2.  So, what games do you play?

I do not game very often. I do enjoy what I can visually with whatever I play in my single player games, so I guess some resources, but I understand my current restrictions too, if that makes sense?

Not sure why it's hard to tell me what games you're actually playing, but okay

 

But honestly, the CPU upgrade won't impact much if the GPU stays the same.  I'd look at a GPU upgrade first.

Sorry misread the post initially.. brain wasn’t functioning apparently lol. Some older stuff like the Bioshock series, Crysis remaster, want to get the Oblivion remaster, play Control, just whatever single player game on my Steam that looks good at the time. Multiplayer wise is hit and miss. Not many good ones right now, in my opinion. 
 

Ok I’ll look more at a gpu. Just hoping some good deals appear before too long. I’d like to eventually have the ability to crank my games to ultra and get a steady 100+ fps at 1440p.

You'll need a 7800xt or better for that then.  The 3700 is adequate for now.

In that case, a GPU upgrade would give you the more performance pump than a CPU upgrade.

 

New RTX 5000-series is just a hot mess right now...and the AMD RX 9070/XT isn't much better (depending on your region).

I'd look for a used RTX 3070/Ti, 3080/Ti, RX 6800XT, 6900/6950 XT.

If you can find them new or used at a reasonable price, RTX 4070/Ti (Super), RTX 4080 Super, RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 XT/X.
