I'm in the process of saving up money to upgrade my aging system thats incompatible with Windows 11.

I've been fine with my current desktop PC, though an upgrade would be very nice. So I dont need the performance bump of an upgraded system.

Since there's now a time limit of when Windows 10 loses support. Why not use the urgency to finally get around to upgrading/updating my Desktop PC.

I'm wondering if instead of just upgrading my PC to something that can run Windows 11. I get a Steamdeck and set it up as a hybrid desktop/portable PC.

I will then have a lot more time to save up the money to upgrade my desktop PC later.

I do want to be careful in case Steamdeck 2 becomes a thing in the next year or so. (I have done research of possible release dates).

I mostly want some confirmation on whether going for a Steamdeck instead of upgrading my Desktop PC is not a bad idea, and if there are some better alternatives or ideas.

I'm open to any suggestions or recommendations.

I don't need the portability and ease of use of a Laptop, most of the times I need a portable computer a Steamdeck would legitimately not take up more time to setup and use.

I own a Nintendo switch and use it almost exclusively in handheld mode. So i'm pretty confident I'll use the handheld nature of the Steamdeck very well.

I live in New Zealand. So getting a Steamdeck at msrp as been mostly impossible untill very recently, when it was officially released in Australia last year.

I have family who live there and can ship it to me.

Newer desktop GPU's dont seem to be as hard to find here in NZ, so i'm not too worried about that.

Current build:

  • CPU: I5-7600K
  • GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
  • RAM: 16GB Dual stick

Budget : Roughly the same as the most recent Secret shopper PCs.

Country: New Zealand

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just force 11 on the current one for now? As in download the iso from ms, get rufus, make a bootable usb using rufus and select the options when pressing start that removes the incompatible list. Boom 11 on a "unsupported" pc.

Theres literal actual core 7000 CONSUMER chips supported by 11 because microsoft forgot they were still selling their OWN systems with some 7000 series cpu's when 11 came out. The list is mostly made up and doesnt matter.

Then take your time saving up money.
