Hi, forgive my ignorance but I've been really busy and been out of the PC world since 2022 and I don't know what's happened since. It seems to be a LOT that's been happening, which may not be true.

Can somebody give me a quick summarization in this subject and tell me what the best CPU and GPU are right now and how some of the others hold up? I think I heard that intel is bad now?

My current CPU/GPU (which will tell you how long I've been out lol):

CPU - I9-9900KF

GPU - RTX 3060

I need to build another pc for my soon to be wife, but I think I'm going to hand down my current pc to her and build myself a new one which I have been wanting to do anyway.

I do play a lot of heavy games and also run a lot of VR on a regular basis, but I also run CAD and other studio/editing programs just as often, which my understanding is that AMD seems to be king for gaming and Intel seems to be ahead in studio context. Would I be mistaken in this or is that accurate?

I will be away for a couple hours but I will read responses later today. Thank you in advance! 🙂

As mentioned by @Dedayog  Best gaming CPU right now is the 9800X3D.  If you need more cores for heavier workloads a 9900X3D or 9950X3D are two options.

I personally moved from a overclocked 9900k to a Ryzen 7700x and I saw a decent increase in framerate with my RTX 4080.  I also so a massive jump in the 1% and 0.1% lows compared to the 9900k.  The 9900k was unplayable in comparison, stuttery mess.

I now upgraded from a 7700x to a 9800X3D and saw an even bigger improvement in certain games.

Would they preform similarly in games compared to the 9800X3D, or would it be a trade off for an increase in performance for editing/modeling and a decrease in performance in games? I also overlooked the motherboard. What's the best motherboard for a 9800X3D? I do overclock and I do currently have an NVMe that I will be transferring.

In gaming they will be very similar in performance if not identical.  Within margin of error on benchmarks.

TechTesters actually released a decent video of the 9950X3D today vs the 9800X3D and Intels newest offering.

Highly recommend looking through this one 🙂  I do like the 9800X3D a lot.

There are many good motherboards for the 9800X3D.  You have the previous gen B650 and X670 ( requires a BIOS update for Ryzen 9000 ) and the new B850 and X870 that was launched for the Ryzen 9000.  Most are basically the same as the Ryzen 7000 motherboards, AM5 is AM5.

Some do have PCIE Gen5 and WIFI 7.

I personally use a midrange ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI with my overclocked 9800X3D.  Its running at 5.6Ghz over 5.25Ghz stock.

No problems with temperatures on the VRM's.  Just pure performance 🙂  You don't need a 450 dollar motherboard for these CPU's.

I am cooling it with a DeepCool AK620 with a constant fan speed of 27%, this is enough to keep it cool and quiet during heavy gaming.

I will link you 3 links for a roundup of the B650 - X670 and X870.  You can also find the videos of these on Hardware Unboxed youtube channel.

5090 is technically the best, but with the insane prices, lack of stock, and all the driver and melting issues going on, I would stay far away from Nvidia. The 9070 XT from AMD looks like a good option for significantly less money and you can actually buy it. MSRP is $600 for 4080ish performance which is a significant upgrade over the 3060.

Doesnt detract from the fact that the 5090 is objectively the best and the strongest GPU out for gaming RN

I edit my posts for so if you saw a typo.... no you didn't, you are just crazy

It actually does because you can’t buy one. Lol it pretty much doesn’t even exist. A paper launch if I’ve ever seen one. And even if you could, $2000+ for a gpu is insane. It’s not even a worthy upgrade over the 4090. 5000 series is a joke.

Is it the most powerful card for gaming? Yes

That's where it ends for the objective statement +you can buy them regardless of inflated prices and low availability so 0/2

The doesn’t make it worth buying. It’s an abysmal value and it tells Nvidia you’re okay with buying their products no matter how bad and overpriced they are. That’s not the message consumers need to send them if they want change.

I believe you dont understand what is being said

I never said nvidias practices or prices are ok

I have made numerous posts sh!t talking them about that

I am making the objective statement that the 5090 is the strongest and best GPU out right now with no competitors and if OP wants the best GPU

Like they did the Objective answer is that the 5090 is the best gaming GPU money can now buy

Is it the most affordable or best suited unless you have F U money? No but I and @Dedayog gave the objective answer OP wanted

Yeah, thank you for answering my question. For this build, I'm on a "tight" budget. I don't have a budget per se, but I don't know if I can justify spending more than $2,500 on a pc given my current situation (about to get married, broke college student that is about to move across the state and attend a university where I am trying to pay for college, housing, etc.)

Given that, what would be the best gpu (I already know this will be my bottleneck by far and I am ok with that) for $700 or around there. I had heard the 4070 and its other variants were good but they're not priced very well... I'm wondering what happened to 70 cards being $500 or less, they seem to be going up in price every generation. 3090 msrp was like $1,250 if I remember (not that you could buy them anyway lol)

So I'm not sure what to get as far as GPU goes. I can upgrade that later, but the rest of the pc I want it to be about as good as I can get at the moment. I picked the 9800X3D I think and I plan to use an AIO with an X870E board with 128gb of DDR5 6400 (MHz or Mt/s? I think they're interchangeable, no?) Like I already said, my gpu WILL be a bottleneck. I am OK with that.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Sadly you are a lil SoL on GPUs in general

If you are willing to go used you can probably find much better deals especially on used 30 series cards like 3070s 3080s or good deals on 4070s and 4070 Tis

To save money you can get an air cooler and be more than fine since they have gotten pretty great lately

Ram I dont thing you will need that much and 64 or at worst 96gb will suffice but I am not the most familiar with CAD and VR so dont take my word as gospel

If you dont need the extra features of the x870 or x870e a B850 board will more than do as well

I like to overbuild some parts lol

I may not need the 128gb now, but I will definitely use it. I don't know how, but I will. I always find a way somehow, It's weird.

I like the look of the 4080 (haven't looked at prices or anything yet) but I tend to stray from used cards due to previous issues that a buddy has run into. Ideally, if it's actually worth it (which I don't know if it is) I want 40 series as much as possible, since It seems like every game I play the graphics just keep getting more demanding and less reasonable.

What's the best price to performance card in this situation in your opinion? I'm open to used, but like I said I'm a lot more hesitant lol

Fastest gaming CPU right now is the 9800x3d. The 9950x3d is faster in some games (and slower in some) but not bang-for-the-buck faster.

If the foot grows get a show with space to spare I guess (dont ask how I come up with such analogies)

The 4080 and 4080 super is hard to find under 1K

For games you can get vastly better deals with AMD but for productivity it will also heavily depend on what you do and use 3D modelling benefits alot from Nvidia and cuda but in other aspects of CAD any card will do realistically

If you use adobe then AMD is also a worse deal as their unoptimised PoS programms want nvidia or they crush (more often than usually)

TL DR if you dont care about raytracing, 3d modelling (too much) and dont use adobe then an AMD card might be a better deal for you

Are you open to prebuilts? There’s some solid ones you can get with a 4070 super for around $1600
