Repurpose Some Controllers??

I have an AKAI MPD 26 usb midi controller that I hardly use for music. I need to find it a new purpose on or off my desk. Maybe I can use it for other programs [video editing] to replace all of those shortcut keys, how exactly do I do that? Or maybe one of you can suggest some cool mods for it to use outside of the computer ,or with one of my extra raspberry pi's? I don't know where to go with it, throw out any and all suggestions! 


PS - This counts as a peripheral right?
