5090 SFF possible?

Not crazy at all

Due to the 50 series's unique double fan floe through design thinning the GPU coolers, putting a 5090 in a sub12L case is very doable. Optimum Tech (now just optimum it seems) specializes in SFF builds as demonstrated here.

He does mention a lot of the challenges you'll face building your own, so while it's not a "guide" it's a good informational bit.

Budget (including currency): 5,000ish USD

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Any and all mainly gaming/4k gaming. Single player and multiplayer competitive.

Other details:

First of all, apologies if this is the wrong place/way to pose a question like this. I recently lost my house and basically everything I own in the recent Eaton Canyon fires in Los Angeles. Included in that loss was my PC and everything along with it. I have already had to relocate 3 times and will be in my current living situation for another 4-5 months before having to move again. The last 2 months I have been binging LTT videos to get up to speed on current tech. Now that I will be somewhat, at least temporarily settled, I want to tackle building a new PC. I though about buying a prebuilt (mainly due to time constraints) but can’t really find something that I think will be suitable.

That brings me to the current issue. I want to know if a SFF 5090 gaming rig would be possible/logical. I expect to be moving multiple times in the next few years because rebuilding (my house) will likely take 3+years. I want a small easily transferable and easily setup able rig. I know the 5090 has its (many) issues including price and availability. I also want to recognize its heating/power draw issues in the build as well. I have seen some creators attempt a SFF 5090 build and also looked at Optimist builds. Optimist looks awesome but a hardline liquid cooled SFF build is pushing 9k. Maybe that’s just the reality of the situation.

Just wanted to get some thoughts from a group of people that are much smarter and more expenses than me in the world of PC building.

Let me know how crazy I am. Thanks!

First off I am reall sorry to hear you have to go through such a tragic thing and I hope things work out

Secondly I suppose it would be possible with the FE card as it is the smallest and thinnest one but with how prices are the card alone could cost you 5K

But the PSU might give you some trouble as they are power hungry cards

I edit my posts for so if you saw a typo.... no you didn't, you are just crazy

If you can get your hands on a 5090 Founders Edition, the card is only two slot, which will fit in many SFF cases. As long as the case has airflow for its flow-through design, it should be fine. Pair it with a 9800X3D, which isn't crazy power hungry, and you've got a box that should easily fit within the power budget of a 1000W SFX PSU. No hard line cooling required. If you combine this with some undervolting and reasonable power limits, you should get 100% of the performance for something like 80% of the power. If you did that, you could get away with an 800W unit very comfortably.

The hardest part will be getting your hands on the 5090 FE card. Good luck with that. They basically don't exist in practice - if anything in history qualifies as a paper launch, the 5090 launch does. The only options are way overpriced on the scalper market, and retailers that sell the FE model have not been getting restocks at a rate that would allow you to just buy one.
