I've been looking for a laptop lately that can get me through the rest of high school (3+ years). I started looking at the Lenovo Y510P last winter and I was intrigued, but didn't have enough money and no solid reason to buy it. Currently, I am looking at the very new Lenovo Y40 and Y50. These both seem like very viable options for video editing, gaming, word processing, and very basic 3D rendering. And all for roughly $1,000 - $1,500.

However! I haven't looked at very many other laptops other than what Lenovo and Apple have to offer.

What Laptops do you guys recommend that can game at 1080p 60fps on almost all games (I don't really care about low textures and stuff like that as long as it is smooth and full res), and get me through all my schoolwork, for under $1,800? (The most I am willing to spend).

Form factor is somewhat important cause I will be taking it places for sure, and don't want a bulky and noisy 1.5 inch thick pseudo-desktop laptop.

All feedback is very much appreciated!

I have an Asus G75VW and the thing is straight up a champ.  I love it.  Plays games very, very well.  Has the processing power for damn near anything.  It's a great buy.  Although, I think if I were to buy something similar, I would go with a 15.6 inch rather than my 17.3.

MAYBE A surface 3 i5 256gb

I may be wrong but doesn't the surface have integrated intel graphics? If so it won't be enough for me.

MSi make some nice ones.

you're right I have looked at those, they seem a little pricey for the parts that are in them tho.

how much did you pay for yours? And is the 15.6 inch same specs and smaller screen or are there other differences?

but they have the nicest form factor. the price comes from the difficulty of packing that hardware in such tiny case.

My dad bought a surface 2 and he use photo shop on it. So I think it would be enough for light 3d work

He also works with CAD files and the surface is his main system

The Lenovo Y50 you were looking at is a pretty good choice. Another good option is probably the Sager/Clevo models. They don't come in the ultrabook form factor, but they're not terribly big. And they're excellently priced.

Here's a user review of that particular model:

I have a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display that I use for light gaming, (on low) Objective-C and now Swift development, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, OpenSCAD, and all other general computing needs. It's very light, and is the perfect balance for me between the 13" MacBook Air and the 15" MacBook Pro.

Unless you're doing serious gaming, I'd say get that or the MacBook Air. You'll love having a full bash shell built in, I am now an official *nix convert because of it.

I have run BioShock (all of them) and Metro 2033 and Last Light on low at 1920*1200 (16:10 full HD) and 40FPS, (which is all you need unless you're playing competitive shooters), good luck running it full res. The display is gorgeous though, I've converted around five photographers, web journalists, and graphic designers to it because of how crisp everything looks and the excellent color reproduction.

Save yourself the weight and get yourself something light. A Carbon X1, perhaps, if you have a vendetta against Apple.
