Bios flashback newbie question.

If I have an unsupported cpu but there is a newer bios version that supports it and I do not have another older cpu to start the system with and do the bios update, do I put the new cpu in and do the bios flashback or can I do the bios flashback with no cpu installed in the the motherboard?

What motherboard do you have? Higher-end motherboards allow you to flash the BIOS without a CPU, whereas most need a working/supported CPU to start the flashback, then you can install the new one

I've ordered an Asus ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI (hasn't arrived yet).

I've watched the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPyElZcsW6o&t=1s  but it's not clear to me if the unsupported cpu shoud be physically installed or not during the bios flashback procedure.

CPU shouldn't be needed. 

 

Make sure to use a small flash drive that's USB2.0, my Asus board wouldn't work with USB3.0 drives and a search revealed that's common, but not clearly documented

How do you know what bios this board comes with?  X870 supports ryzen 9xxx out of the box.

Thanks! But I would have done it anyway, I've learned that lesson the hard way, I had a password protected file on a 256 GB USB 3.0 drive and it kept telling me it's corrupted. Moved it to a 16 GB USB 2.0 drive and it started working again 🙂

I'm on Zen 3 and switching to Zen 5. I don't have a CPU yet. I checked the support page and no, the 9950X3D is not currently supported. Yet.

The 9950x3d will work right off  it's based on the 9000 architecture , so it'll work since the other 9000 will.

 

There may be a new bios to optimize it but it'll boot right up on the bios you have now

 

We had this on the 7000 series as well.
