Control panel is obsolete. Everything has been moved into the new Nvidia app.

Nvidia Control Panel works differently when the main display on a device like a laptop is connected to the iGPU.

If you hook up an external display, it might be wired to the Nvidia dGPU, which will enable the rest of the features. Every device is different though in what ports it wires to what GPU.

Nope, not without significant hardware modification of the device.

Higher end laptops of the last few generations accomplish this with a MUX, which is a hardware switch between the iGPU and dGPU for the main display. Most of the time, gaming laptops without a MUX have the internal display wired only to the iGPU so that the dGPU can be turned off for power consumption aka Nvidia Optimus.

The only laptop I've seen that deviates from this is a early 75Hz (overclocked to 100Hz) G-sync enabled ROG 17.3" laptop I had back in 2016 that had the GTX 970M wired to the internal display. Still have that laptop 🙂
