Hey,

I use a laptop (closed on a stand) and a primary computer.

I have my laptop bios setup for my computer will turn on or come out of hibernation when I plug the power cable back in. This is working really well, but I want to finalise the setup by having a switch on my desk.

I have basically found what I am looking for, but I am not convinced it will allow the right amount of power to flow through and charge my computer.

I think I am going to make one myself that is rated for the power cable I have.

I am looking for some solid advice on what kind of switch (amp, watts and voltage) I would need and the rated cable size with a usb-c male and female cords I can put into either end of the switch.

What do you guys think I need to make this work?

any links, and explanations are greatly appreciated 🙌🏼

I’ve attached a photo of what I am looking to make and a photo of my power cord specs.

You will need a a cable that can support max power of 65W and also allow for a data connection. Most of the usb cables with a switch I've seen only allow power.

Failure is part of success. I may make mistakes, that's how we all learn.

Why would the cable need to have data connection abilities?

The laptop has to negotiate with the power adapter to request a higher voltages. It uses the data lines to communicate this

Unless I can find a switch that can support the 3 cables (data, negative and positive) inside the primary cable. I could just solder together the data cable and by pass it through the switch housing, while having the negative and positive cables on the switch components.

i just need to figure out if the motherboard and the bios settings that trigger turning the computer on is doing this because of detecting a voltage input or because the data cable is shaking hands with it.

What is everyone’s thoughts?

Switching the AC side would be far easier and cheaper. Just get an inline switch and pretend it's a floor lamp.

That is a pretty good idea! So I need to find a second hand cable, chop it in half and stick a switch between them yeah?

Whatever fits the power brick. Flat cables will look better with low profile switches, at least the ones I've built looked fine.

The stock plug is kinda ugly but it's hidden behind the desk so who cares :old-laugh:

Caroline doesn't need to hear all this, she's a highly trained professional.

Awesome, do you have a link you can provide for the cable and the switch, for example purposes so I know where to start? 😜

thanks in advance
