what is Thunderbolt ?

Go to solution Solved by LukaP,

so would it make my hard drive, regardless of it's RMP, operate Faster than SATA 3 ?

no. your harddrive is already slow enough to not even saturate SATA2, so dont worry about that.

what thunderbolt is, is it has the ability to daisy chain a monitor (or more), plus a drive bay and other stuff, so you only use one cable, and get all of your stuff conneceted

as the title says, what is ti and what is it useful for, because there is a thunderbolt Mobo at my local store, i'm planning a third buit in a couple of weeks and i thought what does it offer over the Standard Z77A-G45 ?

Thunberbolt is pretty much a faster USB medium developed by intel but isnt as universally available, because intel chargest a fee per device that uses... while USB doesnt

its a high bandwith protocol, that operates over PCIe. it can carry video, audio, usb, data, and power. if you havent heard of it you probably dont need it tho

it means you can use it for that stuff. its basically a 20Gb/s protocol for transfering anything you want. and the connector looks like DisplayPot

It's a data transmission technology invented by Intel (Apple was the first to license it). It uses an identical Display Port connector, which is directly connected to PCIe lanes, which allow it to operate at 10Gb/s (original) and 20Gb/s speeds. It can transfer data (external HDD), video (external display), audio, and power. The downside is that it requires on iGPU to work, and the cables are expensive (they require active cables to achieve such high speeds, so they are expensive).

Ok, so, can it be used for an external drive say ?

yes, apple uses it extensively, instead of USB almost. they use it for external drives, their monitors, any any other attachment you want, but its only now penetrating into the standard PC market, aimed at professionals and content creators

Ok now i get it, but that would take some adapters right, to plug several devices into one Thunderbolt Cable ?

each TB device usually has TB in and TB out so you can daisy chain them easily
