GPU upgrade question

Go to solution Solved by BahnStormer,

7800X3D is only AU$20 cheaper than a 7900X3D.... but for gaming, the 7800X3D is the better part.

Bundles are usually just a way for retailers to get rid of CPUs / motherboards / memory that aren't popular, so always critique each part, rather than just the CPU.... they often bundle motherboards that are not selling due to poor reviews or memory with poor secondary timings.

Where are the bundles that you're looking at?

Budget (including currency): 459

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Fortnite, CP2077: Phantom Liberty

I am looking at potentially upgrading my Zotac 12GB GeForce RTX 3060 to the Intel Arc B580 Limited Edition Dual Fan 12GB GDDR6 PCIe 4.0 Graphics Card

What sort of longevity, support and performance would I gain/lose from this venture?

Thank you so much in advance. I would much rather operate from an informed opinion

imo think itd be better to save up some more and wait for the b770

its about the same performance as the 4060ti/3070 so not really worth it if you are only jumping up a tier

btw have you considered the resale price of your 3060 for this upgrade? those are still worth a decent chunk of cash due to the 12gb of vram cause of ppl running LLMs and whatnot

Hrrrm definitely food for thought on delaying for the next gen..also, did not think of selling that as it will likely reside in a streaming PC. Not entirely sold on that though...

Only issue is that I'm migrating from my b550/32gb 3200mhz ram/Ryzen 5 5500 to a much better configuration of Intel Core Ultra 7 265K Desktop Processor, ASUS PRIME Z890M-PLUS WIFI-CSM Motherboard, G.Skill F5-6400J3239G16GX2-TZ5RK Trident Z5 RGB 32GB 6400MHz DDR5

My quandary is that I am hamstringing my 3060 with inferior board, ram and chip.

Once I upgrade those, I feel the bit of gain for the Arc would be more immediately valuable than leaving the 3060 in as a placeholder?

Maybe my thinking is skewed though

so you are gonna upgrade the gpu first then platform or both at the same time?

265k is a strange choice and the ram choice is suboptimal as there should be cheaper rams available and the gskill tridentz5 heatsinks are garbage and run 10c hotter than other rams so based on that if you are upgrading them at the same time you should be able to free up some more gpu budget by cost optimizing part choices

i assume youll be turning that 5500 pc into the streaming pc? 5500 will run much better with pbo or a 4.5-4.6 allcore oc due to the lousy stock clocks alongside ddr4 4600+ due to the halved cache so more sensitive to rams but very good imc though should be able to push closer to 5000 given a good enough board and rams

Reason for the config choices were due to affordability - those are bundled.

There is also a 7900X3D config too. Same price

I have enough for the Battlemage but not for the platform for just under 2 months

Edit: contents of AMD bundle (I would also need to procure RAM with this option)

AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D Desktop Processor; Gigabyte X670 GAMING X AX V2 Motherboard

You haven't mentioned any productivity needs, so not sure why you're looking at those workstation bundles.

u7 265k is not really a gaming rig CPU... it's a reasonable productivity workstation, if priced accordingly.

R9 7900X3D is an interesting one. It's a bit of a "Jack Of All Trades" (but master of none)... it will give you a 6 core version of a 7800X3D (7600X3D) when gaming and  a 12 core workstation when doing productivity work.... it's a decent option if the price is a lot lower than a 7800X3D, but otherwise not worth it.

They all get beaten comfortably beaten by the 7800X3D if all you're doing is gaming.

What is your total budget and what have you actually bought already?

What case / PSU / M.2, etc do you have already?

Primarily, it will be used for 1080p gaming though I also run virtualisation for cyber security work

Ideally, I will also be getting a new case and will ensure not to scrimp on heat and air management

Re-use the PSU... I'd be tempted to re-use the case too, TBH.... the 7800X3D runs VERY cool (more of a concern if you ended up putting a 9800X3D in later).

RX7800XT compares very favourably with the RTX4070.... but recommend you do the rest of the build, but leave the GPU part until late Jan (once the new cards are announced).

My  only slight concern would be the comment about virtualisation:

This is NOT a problem, but does actually build a bit of a use-case for the 7900X3D - you'd be able set process affinity to assign some/all of the 6 cores with higher clock speed to a VM while gaming on the 6 X3D cores.... it won't be as fast for gaming as the 8 core 7800X3D (the 3D V-cache is assigned to all 8 cores for this one), but it would allow you to game and run VM's 🙂

I do like the B770 idea though... suspect it will be faster and cheaper than the RX7800XT... likely with at least as much VRAM, but you won't know that until it is released 🙂

Either way in a month you can make the decision on the upgrade options with a LOT more information (i.e. the RTX5000 / RX9000 series releases in early Jan).... maybe even a 2nd hand RTX4080S.... although that will theoretically be getting to the limits of your PSU.

I say theoretically as I never see over 85W on my 7800X3D when gaming and the RTX4080S is more power efficient than my RTX3080Ti (~350W).

Thank you all so much for helping me nut it out a little fuller.

Going to hold off on the GPU as all in pre-order or the Intel branded offering (which I am keen to avoid).

Thinking that whilst the greater share of  weight is placed on my gaming rather than the VM stuff, the extra config ability of the 7900X3D on platform supporting (probably, depending on specifications and price point) the B770 when released would likely scratch the various itches my day to day throws at me.

Might buy a slightly less spec PSU for the stream PC and utilise the one I have for the new rig.

I have always been impatient but logically, if I wait until the entirety of my assignable funds reach my grubby little fingers, I'll have close to 2500 meaning I will also be able to likely finish the AM5 build I started for my son

Just scratch the itch one stage at a time (motherboard, CPU, RAM).... then see if you want to rebuild in a new case when you get the GPU.

If you are buying a new PSU anyway, it makes sense to get a bit of an upgrade for at least one of the rigs too: Corsair do a RM850e model that is pretty good value for money: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/4ZRwrH/corsair-rm850e-2023-850-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020263-na

I'm with you on the hand-me-down approach: my son got my old AM4 rig (the "TV rig" in my signature)... which I had upgraded from a 1600X to 2700X and then 5900X for me... and when my 5900X needed a better motherboard to overclock (hence my obsession with VRM temps) I gave him my old B450, RAM and 2700X... and eventually upgraded that to a 5800X3D when they hit their lowest price (~540AUD).... even the 2700X was a pretty crazy upgrade from the i7-3770K he was using!
