PC identity crisis

Very strange.

Firstly, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Assuming you're not witnessing and issues other than the misreporting then probably nothing to worry about.

When you reinstalled Windows, did you do a fresh install and delete all exiting partitions or was it an upgrade?

I don't think I've ever come across a HDD / SSD with anything that would linger to cause this but if its something in a writable / readable block, maybe try a secure erase tool (either in BIOS if it has that facility or a 3rd party tool which will likely need a bootable USB stick). If its stuck in the Firmware then it might be harder to get rid of but you could see if the NVMe has a firmware flash utility from its manufactures website.

Hey, all!

I am experiencing a very strange issue with a build I completed a while back.

I compiled a Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC with a Ryzen 5 5500, a Zotac 3060 and 32gb ddr4. Using a second hand NVMe drive.

BIOS and all drivers updated and triple checked in case of newer revisions.

Now my great little workhorse thinks its a HP laptop....

I am assuming that the NVMe which I procured has some ghosted remnants of an install of Christmas past..

When I installed Windoze 11 Pro, I only formatted..I did NOT write zeroes to the drive as I did not anticipate this issue

Only reason I am concerned as it bricks my ability to put the PC into a sleep state. It also seems to randomly crash as I assume notebook/laptop power settings may have a little impact on this. I have checked power plans etc to ensure that it works as smooth as possible.

Is it possible to rectify this without fully nuking the NVMe and reinstalling Windows?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice

How does this manifest itself? Is it just the 'Computer Name' or is it in the bit of text that's underneath the Computer name.....?

Thank you for the lightning fast response, Chris

The name is accurate, its the bit of text below it. I am sorry I forgot to highlight the section lol

I also checked in BIOS as some mobo manufacturers have the ability to denote computer information directly to CMOS. Sadly my bargain bin board is a little lacking in that regard

It is not a highly critical concern. We are in a progressive era so if it wants to identify as a slim and sleek laptop, more power to it. Main reason I want this problem resolved is because I feel bad shutting down a laptop without closing its lid 😉

Seriously though, it can ONLY be powered off..not put into sleep. This is exceptionally weird as Windows should detect there is no battery present..

As for the NVMe, I full formatted and freshly installed W11Pro. Epic suggestion on checking its firmware...the one driver/firmware I didn't even consider. I'll look into that right now

Update:

Checking the disk using Samsung Magician, I feel you directed me straight to the issue...

The firmware loaded seem to reflect a base HP firmware install..trying to locate the section of the tool to update the firmware to the latest vendor firmware. Seems there is no provision for updating this NVMe. Checking around a few places to see if I can't stumble across it

Will keep you posted, but at this stage, I think you nailed it.

What a nightmare hahahah

Samsung support are apparently lacking the firmware update for this so therefore redirected me to HP support.

HP support are like unicorns. I'm sure they don't exist - at least in a support sense. Lightning fast to get onto a sales rep, naturally.

HP Sales are currently in the process of trying to shunt me back to Samsung who have advised me that the NVMe made by Samsung FOR hewlett packard is under HP control.

Closing as I will likely end up buying another NVMe when my upgrade kit is purchased in February

I will keep attacking the problem as I don't like anomalies.

Currently, I'm talking with the previous owner of the NVMe drive and obtaining the model or PN of the laptop or was extracted from. HP will not aid me without it, of course, even though I don't need to troubleshoot the entire PC.

Guessing it is warranty related and they don't want to help anyone for free if they can get away with it.

I only need the generic firmware for the Samsung NVMe drive. Last I checked manufacturer flashes were free?
